That's more or less what I suspected. It is often hard to wade through what is just hype and what is great quality. Myself coming from a perspective of high end carpentry I definitely understand that great quality takes time and is not cheap.

I know exactly what you mean about cold knives as well. I've had more than a few knives pass through my hands that I no longer own for one reason or another. Most of those don't ever cross my mind but I just ordered an Esee 3 mil because I miss the 3 I had at one point.

I also at one point had the quantity, then the quality but now I find myself longing for a bit of both. So my purchases now get a bit more thought put into them and hearing from people like you and others on this forum certainly help sway me and I have yet to be disappointed.

Thanks for the replies @Reno Lewis and @DYSPHORIC JOY

Very nice man. I plan on grabbing one in 3V eventually. Great looking blade I just wish the spine was sharpened for use with a ferro rod.

Honestly, I think the chamfered spine is more appropriate for this sort of blade than a sharp 90 would be. On a bushcraft knife, absolutely give me a 90, but this isn't a dedicated bushcraft knife.

I generally prefer to strike my ferro rods with things other than my knife regardless though, so it's likely just personal preference.

I'd like one of his blades in 3V, but I absolutely love 80CRV2. I've been using it in my Pasi Hurtilla leuku for years, and have accidentally slammed the edge into concrete on a glancing swing, full force.

Took a small chunk out of the concrete, but only left a slight ding in the edge. It held up admirably well for what happened. It's an incredibly tough steel with good wear resistance and sharpens fairly easily.

Does Winkler make his standard models in 3V these days, or is it just the TAD knife?

Also check out the Winkler SAR if you like that design. The SAR is about 0.5" longer, made of CPM 154 and incorporates a glass breaker pommel.

Good knife for LBE or pack carry. Not so good for belt in tight quarters. That pommel digs into your side even if you aren’t fat.

I can certainly see that. Nothing a custom leather belt loop wouldn't fix though;)

I remember there used to be a Mexican dude on bladeforums that swore by the rubber handle on his hawk and knife. He was some sort of Mexican nsa/special forces thingy

I remember that guy, can't recall his username though. I recall him saying he was on an anti-cartel task force. And yeah, he swore by his rubber handled Winkler hawk and knife.

Yeah, it really is. I wonder if he's still kicking. His last login was in April of '17...

    And yes, no and yes.

One thing I did find while cutting through some hard maple and hazel was the handle is incredibly comfortable. The way it's contoured really gives you an incredibly solid hold on it, with no chance of it twisting in your hand.

No hotspots that I found in the half hour or so of cutting I did.

Also sliced up some scrap leather, and it cut through it like a room temperature knife through leather.

    :p

Once I have some more time in with it, I'll update accordingly, and I'll see about getting some pics in use.

If you don't provide us with fresh pictures everyday how will we live vicariously through your knife purchase? Me and bushy are counting on you.... Haha

FYI: I tested one of the tire rubber belt knives many years ago. It was very hot outside and the rubber was hot...not good for hands. Later, I talked to a member of one of the units who had requested rubber for an Afghanistan deployment.

His response was that he wasn't whittling in a cave. He related that the rubber provided excellent control with Nomex gloves or bare hands because when deployed, the knife usually got wet fairly quickly in his work environment.

    Made perfect sense.

Exactly, I'm sure the wet he was dealing with was not water either.

Since it rains so much up here, I think the rubber handle would be ideal.

Micarta all the way for me. I've never been a fan of rubber handles though, but that's just personal.

That said, the rubber Winkler uses seems to wear like iron, and it would fit this rainy environment well.
