If this needs to be merged into the fire thread that's cool.

I've really been intrigued by friction fire for awhile now and starting with Andris gifting me a bow drill set at the first gathering I've been working at it. Admittedly I've went months without picking it up on a few occasions. However, of late I've been a bit more diligent on bow and hand drill practice, and today I finally got it.

This was a quick practice session at home on lunch. I'm glad I decided to make the quick drive home and didn't go out for lunch.

I was using a box elder board with the much-shortened version of the pine spindle that Andris gave me. Also integral to the process was the bearing block from Andris and a willow bow I made a few weeks ago.

Now I just have to perfect my technique, or in reality strive for continuous improvement, and also get to work on my first hand drill ember.

Post up your friction fire practice whether successes or failures, we learn from both.

That's awesome! Certainly something I need to start practicing myself.

Speaking of Andris have you heard from him or seen him since the new forum started? Miss seeing him around.

I actually searched to see if he was on here and didn't find anything. Maybe @DYSPHORIC JOY
has some idea about his whereabouts.

Nice. I haven't tried any red cedar on red cedar but I need to. That other pic you posted was my first venture into friction fire.

I have tried the plow method a couple times, I can get smoke but always tire out before the ember comes.

Well, I tried to repeat my same wood combo in camp last night without success. We built a heck of lean to though.

This is one I have been wanting to try for a while, the empty lot at the end of my parents street has a large stand of Bamboo.

Nice I know where there's some decent bambo for this kind of thing. I might try it out.

I got a video somewhere but it got pretty long. The actual coal came quickly but took a few minutes to blow into flames. Using yucca spindle on cedar board.
