This thread will be a list of various FerroRods with storage handles , and how many TinderQuiks (and waterproof matches if applicable) you can stuff into each one. for most of these, you'll need to use a thin stick or skewer or tweezers to remove the tinder from the storage tube that makes up the handles of these FerroRods. first up: These XL matchcases from Exotac are pretty damn fine pieces of kit. I've got one in every ruck, webbing rig , with matches / tinder, as a backup to my ferro rod / tinder fire kits . you can stuff 25 of the lifeboat waterproof NATO / BCB / etc shorter matches into the container, along with 13 TINDERQUIK tinder cottons. You need to roll them slightly between your fingers to stuff them into the lid of the Matchcase . 25 matches and 13 tinder's - but if you cut a TinderQuik cotton in half before lighting , you get a total of 26 pieces of tinder. 1 for every match plus an extra. That's 25 potential fires if you know what your doing fire prep wise - (hopefully you keep your fire going 24/7 so you don't have to use any more of your emergency fire starting kit)
Next up - the Esee FerroRod and Esee FerroRod large with extension tube standard Esee FerroRod Holds 9 tinderquik's in the tube, with the button compass removed. The larger Esee FerroRod with extension tube holds 26 NATO / BCB short waterproof matches plus 2 striker strips, and 14 TinderQuik's underneath the matches in the middle of both tubes. The FerroRod side of the kit holds 12 TinderQuik's , surrounding the FerroRod.
Next up is the Exotac XL FerroRod , an absolute beast of a ferrorod - 1/2" x 4" this holds 8 tinderquik's in the handle.
This is going to sound stupid ok? What if you took a needle and some 100% cotton thread and put a 1-1.25 inch“tail” on one end of your quick tabs? Make ‘em look like ummmmm..a “feminine hygiene product”? Put the tail up, and it would then be super easy to extract them one at a time as needed. Wouldn’t that be easier than trying to fish one out with a twig or the needle nose pliers on your multi tool?
