I just got my PR4 in the mail and I'm amazed! I took it out and chopped down a sapling like butter, something I've never been able to do! It cuts like butter! Awesome knife by an awesome company!
Just Ordered Mine, 7/8/20... I'm a bit late to the Party, but hey its an esee. Anyone try to do flint, churt, or Quartz on the 90*degree spine to get Sparks with Char Cloth or Char wick???
Ok, but Im thinking this esee striker is 1095, and the PR are made of 1095, I would like to try the spine of the PR4 with Flint, and see if that will strike a spark against flint or Quartz, not using a ferro rod.
You will not get sparks using natural stone and the PR4 or any other ESEE knife. 1095 carbon steel is hardened to about 57 RC and that is nowhere near hard enough to get a spark with flint rock. The steel has to be 'carbonized' which brings most of the carbon (very hard) right to the surface of the steel. That harder carbon is what will yield the hot spark when banged against to flint rock. And that is the process used to make the ESEE fire steel shown in a picture in this thread. You can use the spine of the PR4, RB3, JG3 to get sparks from a Ferro rod which is notably softer than flint rock.) Mike Just to clarify, yes, both the PR4 and Fire Steel are 1095 carbon steel but it is the heat treat process that makes the Fire Steel hard enough to throw sparks from a flint rock and not the PR4 which is heat treated to a softer Rockwell Hardness.
I don't know about all this hardness technology but when I throw my ESEE's I see sparks fly off my flint targets.
So I'm looking to buy a pr4 setup, tkc scales and kydex. Anyone have that set up willing to throw up some pictures that carry it vertical? I'm debating between the molle back or the leather backer.
Sweet, thank you. I like that leather backer. I think the molle would be too tall and bulky. I just ordered it yesterday, same scales as you but the orange kydex.
