Tracking from a single picture is nearly impossible, any closer pictures of individual tracks to get an idea of the species?

From an initial glance, it looks a lot like some lines of cougar sign I've followed before, running.

Looks like a cougar to me. Definitely not K9. Roughly how large were the prints?

In the first pic, it almost looks like it was heading up the trail, got spooked by something, and ran back, skidding a bit as it did.

I could be wrong though. Tracking by pictures is hard.

big as my hand, and you nailed the event. I came around the trail bend, silently padding on the duff and the cat and i looked at each other from 10' apart with much surprise each. Cat moved/turned fast around and barrelled thru the forest. i fired off three bangers , two at the cat and one in the air.

    I bet.

And 120lbs is a pretty damn big cat. Most average 80-90, they just look bigger due to all the floof. Especially in the fall/winter.

your probably right, its fur was poofed out < esp the tail. hard to tell though...the initial face to face jaw drop and subsequent cat sprint made it hard to tell.

it was a great night , still coming down from the adrenaline rush
