    11.12.18, Monday. I'm happy to say that I'm going to be north of most of this mess. We'll get a dusting of snow, followed by heavy rains and high winds (gusts to 40 for much of tmw), but most of the nasty will be in the E US south of here ... for once.

    Are you ready for winter yet? :eek:
    _____

    Beginning on Monday night, a storm will make its way over the Southeast and head north. Heavy rain and flooding will hit several Southern states from Texas to Florida and up to Virginia, while snow is anticipated in the Midwest from Oklahoma to Ohio.

    By Tuesday, parts of upstate New York to [southern] Maine will experience a snowy mix as rain pummels areas from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts. Thunderstorms and flooding are predicted to stick around in the South through Tuesday night.

    Also, I hate when we are classified as Midwest.

    We aren’t really Midwest, or The South for that matter.
    Or Southwest.

    Why cant they just say Central US.

    Photo was this morning about 8.

    Snow melted off the concrete surfaces by noon, and some grass was visible again this evening.

    At freezing all day, but the ground temps are pretty warm still.
    Wind is howling now, clouds are moving out and temps are going to be in the high teens (F) for the next two mornings.

    11.14.18. We're still five weeks from winter, but here comes another one.

    Bundle up, kiddies.
    _______

    Winter storm to roar from Deep South to New England;
    80 million brace for snow, ice, sleet

    A winter [sic; only feels like it] storm will bring a messy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain to portions of the central and eastern U.S. over the next two days. Power outages, travel headaches and school closings are all likely as the storm strengthens.

    Over 80 million people live where some level of a winter storm alert is in effect, all the way from Arkansas to Maine over a distance of about 1,500 miles.

    My friend's forecast for Friday, when that mess arrives here.

    No seriously, I'm not ready for winter yet. :(
    ______

    Friday 11/16/18:

    SKY: cloudy and a bit more humid during the day with a 90% chance for some periods of light to moderate snow (accumulations of a 6-12 inches possible with the higher amounts closer to the coast where it doesn’t mix with rain) then becoming partly cloudy and much drier by evening with a 30% chance for a few lingering flurries and continuing partly cloudy to mostly clear and much drier overnight;

    WIND: ENE to NE10-15G35 during most of the day then becoming N to NW 10-15G30 by late afternoon and evening and gradually diminishing overnight to become WNW to W 6-12 by dawn;

    TEMPS: rising to the low to mid 20s during the day (closer to freezing right near the immediate coast) then falling to the mid to upper teens at night before rising a bit toward dawn.

    Friday: we're in the middle of our storm now. It hit NY state, NH and VT pretty hard with totals less than a foot, but more than expected. Our projected totals here have been reduced to 5 - 7". But the bigger news are the night temps. We hit 10F last night. Up in the northern part of the state, one town reached -5F last evening, setting a record there for this date. The winds are gusting to 30 today. Pretty unpleasant.

    I may go out for a walk in the back woods later, but mostly, I'm just hunkering down in basecamp trying to get some work done.

    Here's a pic of the woodland outback of my studio (what I call my "backwoods", where I walk several times weekly) from early week. This was storm 1. Got about 5" from it. (Total depth now after today's new snow is about 10" according to my measure when walking near sunset.)

    Storm 1 had little to no wind, and the snow was wet and heavy (changed to rain later in the day), so it stuck to the trees, especially the conifers.

    Wind is sweeping down the plains today. Steady in the 20s.

    Gusting in the 30s, with a few in the upper 50s.

    Net temperature change in the last 24 hours is -36 degrees so far.
    Going to keep falling the rest of the day.
    Was in the 60s overnight, about freezing now.

    I’ll be staying inside.

    I just hope the temp drops enough to get the mosquitos to hibernate here. ;) I was wearing cargo shorts and jungle boots yesterday....wandering around in Dec looking like Andy the Aussie's kin. Sheesh.

    Less than a week ago we were expecting the biggest snowfall of the last two years, preceded my freezing rain and sleet.

    Instead, we got absolutely zero precipitation of any kind.
