Rough shaping done with a carving hatchet, then finished with a few knives. One of the better wood carving videos out there, imo:

Not bad. But that's not all that impressive that direction.

Can he carve a hatchet out of a spoon?

I agree. That was a fantastic carving video. I liked his use of a saw for stop cuts, especially the on the bowl. I've never thought to rough out a spoon quite like that and now I'd like to try. Nice axe work as well. Thank you for sharing.

No problem. I need to get and make another spoon, or try my hand at a bowl.

    Another good video:

IMG_7395.JPG IMG_7396.JPG IMG_7470.JPG IMG_7483.JPG IMG_7510.JPG IMG_7512.JPG Just finished my first handmade spoon. I just recently got my GB small forest axe and learned about spoon carving. I knew I'd love it. So I started a new tradition this year by making a spoon out of a section of our Christmas Tree truck, and carve the year into it. Here's some pictures of it! Hope you enjoy.

This was done just off a whim. Not any sketching or much planning. It was more getting to know my axe, and seeing what would come about. Needless to say, I'm hooked!

    Tools used:
    Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe
    Bahco Laplander
    Mora 164 hook knife
    Spyderco
    220 & 120 grit sand paper
Really hot oven <---- whoops (tried to harden)
    Coconut Oil

I used Walnut. My tool list was a G.B. Wildlife hatchet, SAK Carver and 400 grit sandpaper. The lump on the spoon handle was a small knot that I decided to leave there.

I had the same kind of knot that ended up as a palm swell. Well kinda... that fork is awesome!!

Thank you. Sometimes the wood dictates the end result. I gave those items to my daughter but I honestly wish I still had them. Just like my Bear Bow Recurve. I gave it to my sister for them to use with their padawans and they do use it on the constant but damn I sure do miss that bow.

I've never done a bowl per se, a sort of trough but bowl sized once. More like a small bread pan but it was functional. I might be trying a spoon now though, looks fun!

Edit: Now 6:44pm, I have a piece that is somewhat flat and looks more like a spatula. Even though I have a couple of small and very sharp hawks to work with I roughed it out but quickly switched to my RB 3 to shape it. Started with about 6" of straight grain seasoned hickory...was this the wrong wood? To hard maybe? I was having real trouble getting a useful shape with a hawk, the chipping away process was getting altogether too close to my fingers for comfort!
