Yesterday I ordered a Husqvarna Carpenter's Axe and one of their Hatchets. A lot of bang for the buck from what I've seen. I hope to have their whole Swedish Hand-Forged line eventually. I'll be sure to show pics when I receive them.

$60 bucks for a Swedish hand-forged axe??? I'm not going spend years to learn how to do that.

It's a heck of an axe. Won't split worth beans unless you twist-split with it, but for chopping it's unbelievable. Bites super deep even with light swings. You can't take "dinner plate" chips with it because of that penetration because it doesn't displace so much wood, so you take more vertical "deck of cards" chips. Does the chopping work of an American-style axe 1.5x its head weight once you adjust to the technique. It's like a big knife on a stick. Wicked.

Sounds like it would be a good carving axe too?

A bit large for that! Might want to try the smaller sizes for carving work. This one's a pretty large axe.

The pole is for balance. To prevent "speed wobble" and to make the axe work for you. So without one you are going to be taking slower swings.

Serious question: used one much? ;) Your statement operates on the false presumption that the axe balances at the eye. In fact, the axis of rotational balance (or "axle") is defined by a line passing through the grip point and the center of gravity, and wobble is measured from where that axis runs because that's the central line around which the axe will naturally rotate. Effectively, polled axes balance like a "T" while those without balance like a "7" but they both are balanced. A poll mostly functions to simplify the manufacture of handles that run along a unified axis when both hands are at their greatest span. I can swing that poll-less Trento as fast or faster than I do American axes of similar chopping ability. The thinner geometry allows the head to weigh less for equal penetration, but at a sacrifice of chip-popping and splitting ability. The chip-popping matter isn't a significant issue because it's compensated for by an adaptation of chopping technique. :)
