We established a nice base camp with most of the amenities as I had my family with me. I always wanted to take them on a trip like this, so i made it happen.

this is not the typical outdoor adventure you would see me post.

    RIVERS AND SNOWSHOES

I arrived at my destination mid morning and was pumped to be out. My entire day was free and my expectations were high.

I loaded up my Heavy Cover canteen and my nalgene at a freshwater spring that was on the side of the road. My grandpa helped build the piping system you see in the picture nearly 50 years ago. I’ve been drinking this water every since I was a little boy.

    B471A8DF-980E-4CDB-A7F6-B5DB89B94041.jpeg

You can see where the PVC pipe was set into the ground with multiple holes drilled into it so the water seeps in.

    A5B35FC8-97DF-4FBC-9AF8-CAE66A039BF3.jpeg

On the way in I spotted a family of Trumpeter Swans that winter on this river system every year.

    6DD4E11E-D333-4483-A63C-8323E75E3896.jpeg

I arrive on site and got my gear prepared. The half track was loaded heavy with food, gear and water. It’s spring time and bears are out with little ones in full force. For safety’s sake, I had the 590A1 on deck, ready to rumble. Not looking for a fight, but I’m more than willing and prepared to end one.

Devils climb. The snow here is still 4 feet deep or more in most spots.

    D5F68F51-D64E-4EB2-A001-320161C6CEF6.jpeg

I snowshoed around for two hours just checking things out. I found a lot of fresh water springs and cool tributaries of the river. This place is amazing.

Hiking away. The weather was absolutely perfect. Snow was melting fast and I was sure to be careful where I stepped as there are multiple streams and springs in this area. I didn’t want to risk falling through the snow into water of unknown depth with my full kit. Wouldn’t be fun.

    590A1 on deck.

This is one of the freshwater springs I was talking about.

Water leveles are still low, but that won’t last long.

    Esee5 for the win.

This is the strangest thing. 4 to 5 feet of snow yet there is a bald spot of life and greenery... hot spots. Volcanic hot springs. There is a mountain nearby that is volcanic in nature but is dormant. This must be from that?

I recon that this birch was 28” at the base at least. Look at that huge frost crack! It must have been damn cold, real fast for that to happen.

This spot was incredible, but I can only imagine how thick this area must be in the summer.

590A1 and my loaded half track. I have my bowdrill set that I made yesterday with me as well. When I find a good set, I keep it until it’s useless. H&B goshawk and super I millie present also!

I put together a tinder bundle and pulled out my bowdrill set. I couldn’t get an ember for the life of me!! WTF...ok, work the problem. I tried one more time and got nothing. Lots of humidity today. I tried a new hole and still nothing. Weird! Work the problem again...flipped the hearth board, drilled new hole, Instant ember. I produced 5 more embers after I got my fire going and could do so in 15 seconds..maybe 20. Never give up!
