No man, feel free! No rules in this house!

 

Here we go,

The sun was out. This was a true blessing. Months and months if dogsh*t alberta winter weather. COld, warm, melt, snow, freeze repeat.

ugh.

Today was nice. Perfect weather.

Went into the river valley and hiked along the upper ridge overlooking the north sask river. I was hopeful to find some sheds, but alas, nothing was found.



ESEE 5 Love. I am a huge fan of the OD green...



Earth!!! LOL I was so pumped to see that the snow had melted a little bit to expose the ground. Spring is here!



Overlooking the river valley. This is a nice spot. I shall return to quaff bitters on this ridge top in the summertime!




Check out the size of this fungi. It was bigger than my hand.





It looked like someone with a small truck or side by side was burning around back here.

Off into the woods I went. I found more exposed earth...made me feel giddy inside.




Some d*ckhead was shooting trees out here for no apparent reason. Pisses me off because I frequent this area a lot and the idea of some in bread snaggle toothed a$$hole(s) shooting while walking down a trail is unnerving. Oh well, i'd hear em coming. Pricks. These were all over the place.



Looks like 5.56 to me...Especially since it didn't exit the tree.





I carried on looking for a nice place to make camp. Cast Iron cooking was one of my agendas for the day...I was pumped for this. Cooking with cast iron is an old art...a skill that is reminiscent of old traditions.




I found another epic pitch haul. I could feel the sun on my back...it was warm out..Awesome.




I found some ideal dead standing firewood and made quick work of processing it with my SILKY GOMBOY. Awesome saw...But i want a bigger one hahahaha

Once I found a site, I got a fire going and started making preparations for dinner. I was hungry and it was time to eat!



I had pulled two logs beside the fire to make a swamp grill on. This was I could regulate the heat on my pan without an issue.




These two tools are all a woodsman needs! This is a really good combination.




I made a bannock stick out of a nice piece of birch. Birch doesn't give off too much flavor into the bannock when you cook it.




My feast for the day. Steak, mushrooms and fresh rosemary.





Time to get cooking! I melted some butter into my skillet after it got relatively warm.



I tossed the mushrooms in after I diced them up with the 5. This smelled incredible!!!






Once the shrooms were cooking nicely, I got to work on making the bannock. I love this stuff.




Here it is, ready to cook. I love cooking it this way.

 

Mushrooms were basically done, so it was time to get that steak on!!!

HASHBROWNS BABY!!!! OHHHHHH YYYEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!



YES!



A feast out in the woods.



After carefully regulating the heat and flipping the steak only once, it was done... I couldn't wait to eat this thing!!!




Words can't describe how good this smelled..It tasted even better. Cast Iron pan fried steak and mushrooms with fresh rosemary, served on a slab of fresh cut, dry spruce.



Look at it...just look at it....Perfection.







I chowed down on some much needed calories after my trek through the countryside. Fully restored and completely satisfied, I turned to my primitive ways and practiced friction fire.....Stay tuned

 

As I munched on copious amounts of delicious carbs, I crafted my friction fire set out of some dead standing poplar with my ESEE 5.



Bannock...Perfectly done.





I got my bow drill set and burned in..



MMMMMM...Hashbrowns!




It didn't take long to get an ember. Once the ember matured, I placed it in my tinder bundle and blew it into flame!









Such great practice! It's addicting once you get the hang of it!

I made a few more embers just for fun before I packed up and walked out. I was satisfied and disappointed all at the same time. It was an awesome day, but it was over...until next time...

Want to chime in here Bushman?You must have the best update.

 

Have not heard from him in almost a year??
I know he was doing refinery shutdown work and running huge crews, and insane hours.....

But no contact in long long time now. Hope he is okay....he never finished updating his trip report......and he is in BIG cougar and Grizzly county.

 

He's active on IG. I'll shoot him a message.

My Brothers.

I’m back.

I fell off the face of the earth for a long time and was very active on IG. Reno tracked me down on IG and informed me that I was missed, so I have returned.

I have a years worth of trips and adventures to post.

I apologize for my absence. Bushy, I will PM you. We have much to discuss brother!!!

Speaking of bears...I stumbled across this last weekend...there either was nothing inside or I didn’t wake it up...
