    I'll try'n take some good cottonmouth/water moccasin pics at work. They'll give a good visual warning flashing their mouth open at you when you get too close for their comfort. They're not as pugnacious as they're made out to be and tend to retreat when poked or prodded with a long stick.

    Alligators or no issue unless someone in your area is feeding them and they lose fear of humans. I've swam and kneeboarded in the same canals and bayous with gators and never was bothered. About the only way they'll attack is if you mess with a nest.

    I do field work for a wetland ecology service that monitors Louisiana's marshes and coastal swamps. So I spend a good bit of time in the right places for them and a good bit of other wildlife.

    I love snakes, especially rattlers. I only need 3 more to finish re-covering my JCM 800 head!

    Yeah I'm in it 3-5 days a week. I've always loved that stuff though.

    Question: do you know if Blue Cross insurance pays the antivenin costs if you get hospitalized for snake bite? I've heard that most insurance companies do not cover the cost of antivenin.

    Blue Cross should cover minus the deductible. I have administered CroFab several times and never been denied payment but you can guarantee if you have catastrophic coverage you are going to max out of pocket. Very expensive.

    I will check this week to verify though in case there have been changes. With ACOs and all of the service shuffling due to the Affordable Care Act, I am not sure of anything at this point.

    That's catastrophic, so they'd have to by law. However... Insurance companies make a game of declaring "Usual and Customary" fee schedules that capitate medical costs at around 30% of actual cost, so that explains the insane markup and why your community will be having bake sales if/when you get the bite. They have no compunction about running you into the poorhouse and seeing you go on medicaid in order to shoulder the bulk of such expenses. It happens all the time. I always tell people I can't afford to go to the hospital because I have insurance. Not Obamacare, mind you. If you don't see Co-Ops crumbling all around that stinking abortion, you should run to the eye doctor, fast! obamacare by any other name is still medicaid and no employer should list that as a benefit.

    If the envenomation happens on the job they definitely cover it. Our office has checked to make sure all local hospitals in our region stock the antivenin we'd need.

    On a side note, the project I'm working on has been around over 11yrs without anyone getting bit by a snake, we take considerable care when going in and out of sites. I worry more about feral hogs than any other wildlife I encounter.

    As of yesterday, I cannot find evidence of a claim being denied.

    Think the locals called these Bronzebacks, but I'm not sure what they're actually called;
