We found it and a broad banded watersnake in the same stump using some patentleather beetle holes to hideout in.

I love that pic of you boy with that racer! I get odd looks about finding red phase cottonmouths west of the Mississippi River, usually from the information I've found that's more a eastern cottonmouth trait. I caught an young indigo snake once in Mississippi as a teenager on a scout canoe trip, my dad was there so I had proof. Boundary maps are more of a suggestion to a degree. Confirmed puma sighting in Louisiana are providing that in the last few years. Eastern Texas cats are moving eastward, and Arkansas is seek alligators spread northward as the populations recover.

Encounters with potentially harmful creatures is a common occurrence with most who venture outdoors. The snake is "hands down" the most vilified animal in the US. It can also cause considerable damage through venom or stress response initiation.

In this section we will post reptile encounters and other venomous animals. All reptiles are welcome since identification is paramount to avoiding injury for both the snake and person.

Good call! I'll start including common and Latin names with any I add to help with identification.

The top in mine are a pair of Coastal Taipans, then a (cranky - see he is all flattened out) Red Belly Black Snake and finally the shed is from am Eastern/Common Brown Snake (which has caused me great angst as it was residing under my house most of last summer it seems, keeps the mice/rats away but makes it an adventure to get the lawnmower out or to go rummaging around in my stored gear that lives under there.

Wow, that is a pretty interesting combination of a potential quick death.

I only recently moved to the south so i kind unfamiliar with said snakes... I'm used to Rattlers warning me when i have to be worried.... I live a half a block from a swamp and there are always snakes moving around... BUT my little swamp has not only beware of snakes but also beware of alligators..... lovely place.....

Alligator are like River Puppies downright cuddly when compared to a Saltie... :D

.... the one above actually killed a fisherman a few years after I took that picture.

.... I thought there was going to be a croc fight here but the one at the back submitted (nose in the air out of the water) to the dominant male (front) as they swam toward each other.

....my favourite part of the warning signs... ;)
