Man I love these snakes. Wish we had them here. I caught one at a rest area one time. He would crawl and hiss really loudly.

I'm almost certain based on the head shape its a pine. I'll post some pics of both.

I was looking at the pronounced verticals on the face. Hard to tell from the pic. Looked at Warrior's post again on BF and he felt it was a bull. Either way nice snake. I have seen a dark variant pine in east TN even though they are not really thought to exist here. Also, found an eastern cottonmouth but no one believed me because I was a kid. Wish I would have had a camera back then. Another one that everyone called BS on was a speckled copperhead but have pics and video to prove that one.

I'd love to see those pictures. Snakes are one animal I can never get enough of.

Holy crap, do you breed those things!? I've never known anyone who encounters, let alone catches, as many copperheads as you. That's freaking impressive sir.

Edit: Wow that completely slipped by me. I didn't even notice at first. That's an amazing animal. Catch of a lifetime. Ever seen one since?

This was one of four prairie rattlers that lived on my dissertation study plot in central NM during the 1980's, a 250,000 acre wildlife reserve closed to the public. One needed a permit to be there. As a grad student, I got one.

This one was distinct due to its coloration. Light phase color. The other three were darker. I called this one "Dusty".

We got along fine for seven years. It's almost like s/he got to know me, knew I wasn't going to hurt it.

This shot was with a 90 mm macro lens on a tripod. Took me 10 minutes to set up the shot in the early morning cool when it was torpid, trying to thermoregulate. I got the shot, then, as the sun heated up, Dusty slithered into a nearby yucca. Last time I saw that snake.

S/he and her brothers and sisters overwintered in the Los Pinos Mts, 5 miles east,
then returned to their territory every spring. I lived in my pickup for seven summers there while doing my dissertation research. Some afternoons, the only shade for miles was under my truck. Those were some of the best summers of my life.

Nope. Was pregnant and dropped 14 or so crawlers and not one with even a similar pattern. I don't breed or actively catch them but like to take photos. When I encounter them on my property I just move them to another location.

I have snakes on my property that are easily approaching 25 years old. As an 8 year old I had what they judged as a "record" black rat snake but nobody really cared. Was measured at 9'1" at the fair by TWRA.

Dang that's a crazy big rat snake. I've never seen one close to that. I've caught several over 7'. But I understand about people not caring. Most people look at me like I'm nuts when they realize that not only do I like snakes, but that they hold such a important role in my life. It's refreshing to hear from other people who feel similar.
