It is a great round and one of my favourites, it held many long range European records and has taken all manner of game around the world. It is on a huge resurgence here. My only reason for not having one in a modern rifle (I have some Swedish Mausers and a metric shyte tonne of ammunition for them) is they they require a long action and if I am not needing something like my .300Win I want a medium action. I do see a .260Rem in my future however. The guys I hunt with who use the x55s are getting great results both accuracy and performance wise. I do know they are using Hornady SST projectiles that they home moly coat.

I’ve been reloading the 6.5x55 for my tikka for the last two years. It’s a great round. Totally under appreciated

I will say it’s not necessarily the best round for a new reloader to start with because a lot of the data out there is low pressure for old mil surp stuff and to reload for a modern rifle will likely take you at or beyond published max.

It is every bit as capable as the 6.5 creed or 260 with the potential for a little more horsepower just under the 6.5x284

My kid brother and I bought a case (12) of M96's when the old Century Arms International was still in business in Montreal (1987-ish), for $39 each. I still have a couple of those rifles in original trim, a few have been sporterized and a truckload of critters have bit the dust over the sights of those old blasters. Back in the day, there was only Norma for brass and we made it up from 6mm Remington. I ran everything from 85ht Sierra JHP's up to 160 gr RN through them and honestly can't remember needing to shoot anything twice.

6.5x55 is a sweetheart for sure, but thesedays I'd go .260 Rem or 6.5CM...

    Nice setup Zeek!

My bench isn’t nearly as photogenic and in an unheated workshed. In this weather I’d have to fire up the kerosene heater for an hour to get the interior up to merely uncomfortable.

I used 2x6 lumber for the top with a sheet of birch plywood glued over it.

On the end where my press is bolted on there is another layer of 2x6s screwed and glued underneath running perpendicular the top layer. So in the area of my press it is about 3.5" thick.
