Yeah recoil is fairly negligible with the .30-30. that's a 336W model though which is cheaper than the 336C so it has the plastic butt instead of a rubber pad. You wouldn't notice the strap.
My CZ 22LR has a hard plastic butt too. I wish it was rubber, but only so I didn't have to worry about leaning the rifle against a wall, and have the butt want to skid on the hardwood floor. Other than that, not a big whoop.
Even on a larger caliber rifle don't think the back strap would be an issue (I hunt with both .300Win and .375H&H) in normal field use, I think it may become irritating if the rifle in question was a range toy or something that you are firing many rounds out of in a single outing. Hunting I don't think I have actually ever felt my .375 recoil.
Do you have a brake on both ? I know there's still a lot of recoil. My friend has a brake on his new 300 win and you still feel the recoil. Feels more like a 270win, to me. No pain, just a shove.
Nope, I have a passionate dislike of brakes so none on the .300. My .375 is magnaported (as was the rage in the 80s) and it does somewhat lower the muzzle rise but not lessen recoil. If I had my time over I would not have it done today. The .300 is less pleasant to shoot than the .375. as i have discussed here before, it is a whipping action whereas the .375 is a long rolling shove.
@chorpie that thing looks sweet on that 336. I have one from Galco on my 1895SBL and love it. Leather and lever just go together!
I've shot a 300 win mag (affectionately named Thumper), sans brake, but magna ported. Also a 375H&H and a 416 rem mag ( I can't recall if it had a brake or not, believe it did). So I know what you're saying. Edit: It's funny. People expect the big bores to be the mean recoilers. But sometimes it's a Winchester model 70 featherweight in 270win, that hurt more than any other rifle previously fired. <--- Not my experience, but a friend of mine.
A Golden Eagle in 7mm Rem was the worst recoiling rifle I have ever used. So much goes into the design of a good rifle it is easy to miss something, I actually think the majority of makers do a good job of getting it right, but once they don't....
My .308 MVP Scout kicked like a mule, and would break blood vessels and leave bruises on my shoulder after a day at the range. I added a (modified) Limbsaver to it, along with a Surefire Procomp brake, and the recoil is almost nonexistent now. It's like holding a pillow....that shoots hot lead at 2500 fps http://mossbergmvp.com/index.php?threads/limbsaver-for-mvp.1948/ Also, got some good stuff in the mail today (and yesterday). Burly BK2 (from @Dagwood), BK24 D'Eskabar (I got 2 of these guys), and a TAD cap.

I like wearing wrist-sh¡t ( as I call it). These are my 2 new ones. I also have more "BC-style" ones. But wasn't wearing em today.....
Have yet to find a more well-made work boot. Union made in America and they feel great. The pair on the left is insulated and waterproof. The pair on the right is because I'm a welder and don't like laces caught on fire or molten steel getting caught on the top of my foot.
Are those Thorogoods? Of all the steel toe boots I've worn out, I'd have to say my favorites are Georgia Boot(USA made) and Redwings.
They are Thorogoods. Most Redwings are now China-made. Never had any Georgia Boots but Carolinas are nice and also American made I believe.
