This just in. Hot off the Orlando shop floor. Randall Model 5-6". Nickel silver hilt and butt cap with wrist thong.
In the tireless effort to educate the masses, Expat ™ Knives would encourage you to read up on the famous author and woodland minimalist, Bradford Angier. Why is this relevant? Mr. Angier's favorite Randall was the Model 5 as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford_Angier For extra credit, go read up on Ross Allen, the snake dude. He also carried a Randall 5.
Yes. All the features (with their extra costs--everything Randall costs!) are as follows: Black Micarta: $45 Nickel Silver Hilt: $25 Thumb notches: $25 Nickel Silver Butt Cap: $75 Wrist Thong: $25
Is that legit?! How come the alligator doesn't tear him apart?! And how can he hold his breath and fight underwater for that long?!
By the way, many episodes of Sea Hunt were filmed at Silver Springs. Which is one of the best shows ever made. The camera work underwater looks good now so it must have been almost futuristic 50 years ago.
There was very little smoke and mirrors from everything I have researched regarding Allen over the years. Sea Hunt, at least some episodes, were filmed there. If only we could find out which 5-6
I've got Angier's How to Eat in the Woods and love it, probably my favorite text on foraging wild foods! Mr. Allen survived quite a few envenomations in his life if I remember correctly. Amazing guy!
Well, I only keep my 25, my 15, my mini-Gambler and a throwing knife. I don't really collect them. The rest are just for sale. I don't get enough in to call myself a dealer, but I get one or two in every once in a while for sale. So, this one is not for use, it's for sale.
I see, that makes sense. Still a nice personal line-up. I feel like it's a not brainer to put an order in for one, but I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. The 15 and the 25 are the two that I like the best. This is coming from someone who has never really held either, though haha.
Well, if you want one, I'd suggest you go ahead and put your order in. Current delivery time is 5 years Or save some money and buy one at Blade next year. Inflated prices but you get it immediately. The 25 to me is the absolute best. Mine was a gift from a good friend so it's extra special in that regard too, but it's just the right size, feel, looks, length (5" blade), thickness, etc. It also has a rounded handle. I've come to realize that's my favorite grip. If you're going to war or going to abuse it fighting zombies or cutting through car doors and helicopters, I think the 14, 15 or 16 is probably the best. But they might be the least practical for traditional woodman duties.
Well, you know he wouldn't have a leather handle with all that water he was always in so you can bet it's a micarta handle. The fuzzy pics I've seen don't seem like it's stag. So, 5-6 with micarta. The only question would be would he have upgraded from the brass to the nickel silver? It wasn't super common during that time, brass was king, so you can make some educated guesses. Then, did he have a thong hole or not? That's about all you have to wonder.
You never know when you'll need one for the zombies. The 25 definitely looks like the most "useful" in the general sense, at least between those two. The 15 just has that look to it, though. Does yours have the finger grooves?
Yes, mine does. Not sure what exactly you're looking for but the Model 28 Woodsman is sort of a cross between the 15 style and a more outdoorsman style knife. It has the 25 blade, which I really like:
The only Randall's I have left are the Woodsman and a 4" model 5. Angrier had a compass in the butt of his #5.
