I wonder if the morels are up??? My wife hinted at our evening meal that we should go check our spot. It is always a toss up of who gets there first...us, or the deer? We hit the jackpot at one spot this afternoon. ONE: TWO: THREE: Random pics: Gotta have knife pics: 42 total in an hour. That is a lot for us! Thanks for stoppping by.
They taste like chicken! We soak to kill any bugs, batter like chicken fingers, and deep fry. Last year a local guy was selling them for $50 pound/raw. That really are fantastic.
Haven't had one either, I'm always worried when I also read about false morrels. My ability to identify plants is terrible. About the only things I'm confident Identifying is grapes, mangos, avocados, bananas, and strawberries.
If you have a guide the differences between the real and false ones are pretty easy. I always take a guide and never get confident and do a second sort at home. Pays to be precaution and when in doubt throw it out!
We soak in water lightly salted. Truly doesn’t kill bugs, but does drive them from hiding if any are present. We wash in fresh water and allow to dry before batter.
These are called Half Free Morels. The false morels are red, and are solid rather than hollow. https://nature.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/half-free-more
Cool. I used to work with a guy that ate the false ones too. He said he could just eat a few at a sitting before he started feeling it.
Nope. He retired a few years ago and he's still eating them. But the false morels are pretty tame compared to some of the other crazy stuff he used to eat.
