It was actually quite warm, thats why it was so foggy. Upper 30's when I snapped the picture in the morning, hit low 50's by afternoon. This has been a bipolar winter. Negatives one week, 50's the next. We've caught a bunch of nice crappie. Can't find good walleye or perch. Everything has been small. Can't complain though. Many years we don't get enough ice to go out.

I have family in the New Orleans area and many years ago one of them took us on a walking tour of the French Quarter and included a cemetery. Due to the high water table they have cemeteries that are above ground and sometimes bury multiple bodies in the same graves or vaults over the years. Heat and humidity can break down a body in less than ten years. They will then open the front and slide another one in and seal it back up. One vault I saw had seven names on the front.

This picture is the inside of one of these vaults. There was a gap at the top of the front that was two to three inches wide, just wide enough for me to take a picture through the slot. I was not able to actually look inside and did not know what it looked like until the film was developed.

This is a picture of a picture for the purpose of posting it here. Too lazy to scan it properly.

Thanks for posting this! Being from the area mentioned I forget how differently our burial practices are from the rest of the country.

I remember stories from when I was a kid and Louisiana history class talking about pre-levee Mississippi River floods causing coffins to pop out the ground. The lead to the vaults like you posted. For single coffin burial sites they'll have a huge concrete cap over the site.

The cemetery we were in had a very thick wall around it because the wall was made up of vaults. That was where the multiple burials appeared to be.

Ok, I've never been inside any of the cemeteries in Nola. I'm about 45 minutes southwest from there. Our's are kind of a mix of the multilevel vaults and single level.

First time I've ever seen mammatus clouds in person. Just one pic out of about 100 taken, haven't sorted through them all yet.
