I totally forgot about Grey ghost, I have one and I would say it's second tier but just barely. They are very good quality

I would definitely place timbuk2 on second teir. They are ok but chrome makes a way better bag same style; also made in the U.S.; just heavier but completely waterproof and way, way more durable unlike timbuk2 the durable part Imo but ive used the sh!t out both those bags as a bike messanger as a kid and chrome defiantly outstands and exceeds timbuk2.

.....also Thanks Zeek for taking the time to post this and deal with everyone's

You will not be disappointed, the price points a bit scary but well worth it. I've spent double collectively on other packs and didn't like them so money well spent in my book.

Eagle Industries was top tier but not sure of quality now since owned by Vista Outdoors.

I still have gear that is near perfect except for stains from the 90s. Assault Systems was another overbuilt company.

The most unique pack I have is a Lodestone from CO. Very innovative from that time frame.

That looks like a vanquest pocket organizer. Maxpedition makes a similar product in a bunch of differnt sizes

Eberlestock and Hill People Gear are made in the USA. Mystery Ranch is mixed USA/Phillipines

I would put them in top tier myself. Very good quality. Though TAD and others are better.

Agree completely, the old Eagle Ind was one of the best. Alot of the Eagle people from the old days are now at First Spear I have heard.

Agreed on Eagle, I was buying their gear (and Assault System - though well made not as well designed IMHO) in the 1980s and still use some of it today.

Agree on some of the Assault Systems designs. I just liked the posters and ads.

Thanks @chorpie , I think I had Eberlestock and Hill People Gear as made in the USA originally.

The Hill People Gear website clearly states, "Unless otherwise specified, all products are made in America out of American materials." So I am not sure how I messed that up...

Mystery Ranch show USA, Philippines, and Vietnam

However, I see Eberlestock coming up as made in Vietnam and I can't find any information on their website regarding where their stuff is manufactured. I even found some tag pics showing made in Vietnam, so idk.

My Halftrack says it was made in Vietnam.

Eberlestock moved their production a few years ago and I remember something about them being sold around that time. There hasn't been any quality difference in the ones I've seen

I'm not sure where to put Eagle Industries. I may stick them in the second tier category until I get feedback from someone who has purchased something within the last couple of years. I see they closed the Fenton, Missouri factory a few years ago. Also, their website kinda blows...

I'm curious what qualifies first, second and don't bother. There are some bomb proof packs in all categories but what really separates the men from the boys is refinement of design, comfort and durability all together. Really just thinking out loud lol
