You don’t cut down the length of your toothbrush because you feel it’s wasted space and weighs to much do you? (I seriously know a guy who takes weight very seriously )
One of my biggest takeaways from joining a sar team has been to pack less. I still find myself with too much gear most of the time, but I'm getting better.

I have a knife in every pocket!
I only carry the gear that will fit in my truck. Anything more than that is just overkill.
I admire those that can live out of a duffel bag. I do not see the need.

When you absolutely positively have to have the lightest pack around ....
I do not believe they are commercially available now though...
