Did have (along with a bunch of other historic semis) prior to 1996. For handling I was torn between the Garand and the SAFN49, to shoot the Swedish AG42b was the bomb. If I could have just kept one...most probably the Garand.
If you get the opportunity again, and you have the means, I recommend it. The CMP used to offer them rebuilt from surplus and I think Fulton Armory still offers them. Not exactly state of the art, but still an amazing rifle.
I have my grandfathers M1 carbine from WW2. Such a slick rifle, and I love that it's stamped general motors, it's fun to show off to people who aren't huge history buffs.
I love mine. If you want one either order one from the CMP or go to one of their stores and buy one. Best price you are going to find.
