This is my only straight razor. It is a Griffon Carbo Magnetic. It was my grandfather's straight razor for years. He carried it with him in his Dopp kit throughout WWII. First through the European Theatre and later in the Pacific Theatre. My Dad never used it but gave it to me a couple of years ago. It was in really, really bad shape. Chips in the blade, rust, missing pin so the scales hung loose. As you can see, I only have half of the box remaining. I sent it to a restorer. (And no, I can't find his name but they were fantastic to deal with!). I wanted it restored to usability but not brand new. They did a great job. I shave with it on very rare occasions. I will get around to getting a Flexxx strop for it so I can use it more often. It's getting pretty dull now, so I don't use it anymore. I actually think it would make a pretty good EDC blade Anyway, ladies and gents, let's see those straights!
I've got a Dubl Duck Dwarf 5/8 around here somewhere that belonged to my great grandfather. I have a Duck Special #1 5/8 that was ground down (lost a little length off the end) probably due to breakage, and a Henckels stainless 6/8 that get most of my shaving duties when time permits. There's a J.R. Torrey 5/8 in the mix on occasion.
Ive got several razors and cups/brushes I got from my granddad. Heres one he used for years, the Spike.
All the family straight razors disappeared. However, (when I shave) I still shave with my grandfathers safety razor. A Gillette Super Speed. The old ways were better...
WOW @nathan shepherd I'd say you are as addicted to shaving as I am to EDC. Absolutely fantastic pictures my friend!!!!!!! Now following you in IG.
I have been using a straight razor for a couple of years and have a meager collection that covers a couple of hundred years and includes a Carbo Magnetic.
I've got a good few...will see if I can get some pictures though I know I'll probably be prevented by work. A few modern Dovos and a handful of antiques.
There is no sadly about it! I LOVE me somebody DE shaving! (Currently on a few month break thou...) Those are some Awesome photos!
I love the DE too man. The Merkur HD, with a Feather Hi-Stainless is bliss. I have some Derby blades from probably 7 years ago still in the wrapping that are nice. Not a huge fan of Merkur blades. I can get some parts of my neck closer with a DE than a straight.
I have probably 10 different DE razors I could use but prefer my Gillette slim. I have a Gillette Fatboy in mint condition I've been saving I ended up buying a sample pack when I first started and picked Feather blades to keep going and I never had any problems with them. My brother actually got me in to DE shaving. I normally HATE shaving BUT if I have to a DE is my only option
I've got two straight razors. The older one is a T Noonan & Sons Belmont that my dad used. His dad used a straight razor as well but that's somewhere at my parent's house. The other is a Dovo Best which is a great place to start if you're looking to get into straight razors. I generally only use my straight razors to shave when my beard grows too long for my DE razor but not long enough for scissors. My double edge is an old Gillette Fatboy. My brush is a Col. Conk boar brush. I've been experimenting with soaps but I prefer Col. Conk's almond scented soap.
Bookmarked, thanks, Nathan. My brush is getting pretty old. I bought it because it was a step up from the cruddy brush I was using at the time (some crappy Walmart Van Der Hagen). Now its time to step up again. A lot of recommendations on Reddit pointed me to Whipped Dog but do y'all have any suggestions and recommendations? I probably won't be ordering soon but maybe I'll ask my wife to get me one for Christmas.
