I have never done leather work before but like so many other things I try -- I just stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night. The axe is a Council Tool Axe. I patterned off a Wetterlings that I'll show at the end. I don't really have any leather working tools so I just cut with a box cutter, very carefully I might add. I bought these rivets at the Tandy store. No stitching, no skill, no tools for that. I had to use rivets. I did buy a set of punches and anvil for setting all the rivets and snaps. And Tandy had a sale on a hole punching plier for $11. What a deal. I had some left over scrap leather from when I laid a large piece on my workbench as a work pad. Trial fitting prior to setting the rivets and staining. Stained and ready for glue and rivet set. I sanded this edge prior to burnishing. Gluing up. Antique brass on the hardware set off nicely by the stain on the leather. In an act of vanity I bought a set of alphabet/number stamps, as well, to add a personal touch. It was so worth it. The Wetterlings axe I patterned from. I made a lot of mistakes but I learned a lot as well. It was a rough first effort but it will hold up to abuse even if it isn't so refined.
