but gift should not be used as a verb. I hate it like God hates Cleveland.

    100% word aversion.

No one gives anything anymore. Everyone gifts. "I was gifted this knife." "We are gifting a homeless person a magazine with apartment listings this season." "That driver just gifted me the finger!"

I'm sick of it. The only verb I approve of in this genre is give. Gift is a noun. Gifting could be a gerund and if you use it correctly, I guess I can tolerate it. But that's as far as I go, and that's a razor's edge, so it's best to stay away from it.

It drives me uncontrollably mad, like wrath, ire, fury, rage, fist-clenching-vexation-type mad.

    That's all.

    Oh yeah, Merry Christmas.

I tried to grow a business once. Water and fertilizer did not make the restaurant any bigger. So a guy told me he would gift me some new equipment if I would dialog with him about a franchise. So I flew to meet him, and as I began to deplane I realized I didn't have the desire anymore.

Couldn't agree more, Expat. It's disgusting and juvenile, and I just don't tolerate it in grown men.

You can give something, or be given something, but you can't "gift" something. Gift has always been a noun, not a verb, adjective, expletive or anything else.

I don't know guys, maybe my knowledge of the English language is lacking, but I'm fairly certain (like, 99% sure) that "gift" has been both a noun AND a verb for over 400 years...

Just because you don't like the way it sounds, doesn't mean it's incorrect.

That said, the use of "irregardless" and other unintended double negatives irritates the pee out of me.

Then there's always "regift or regifted" for the ones that think you will like something they did not.

Our lexicon is a living breathing thing for many reasons:
    • Small minds love big words.
    • People like to "sound smart".
    • People use words less accurate to make something more appealing.
Think about the old argument, Hemingway vs Faulkner etc.
I appreciate spartan text and speech but have had to write in a manner to please others for many years. I also like to correct and simultaneously insult others with the phrase "uh...that is not what that word means" when they are pontificating.

    Merry Christmas

Irregardless, whether (or not) one has gifted or regifted, sometimes it's to no avail, as some people who deplane from less cultured countries, don't appreciate gifting, as they are nothing but open mouth chewers, no sense in reaching out to them.......anywho, I digress.
