What dog do you use if youre going with one dog primarily? A pit or catahoula leopard dog is what im leaning towards. Im open for suggestions?

My buddies in Florida use pits and Catahoula. And a few pit/cat mixes. I love Catahoulas. Great dogs.

A dog that knows pig hunting:D. Seems to be a different style of hunting with dogs between our country's. We use dogs that have a decent nose so they can find and then lug for themselves. Over there from what I've seen you run hounds too find them and then walk the catch dogs in to grab them. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Every time I see this thread i see "hot dogs." Must be hungry all the time.

Id get in with someone running dogs and see if they are breeding or have a dog they need to move.

That's how everyone I've met does it around here with separate bay dogs and catch dogs.

What breeds are common for y'all style of hog hunting?

Bullarabs are the main breed used here nowadays but crosses with Irish wolf hound or stag hounds, great danes, bull mastiff then bull terriers, staffys and grey hound are still popular . When they are about 5-6 months old for the smaller breeds they can start having a run with the experienced dogs and for the bigger breeds around 8-12 months depending on the dog

That's some awesome crosses for damn capable working dog! I worked as a veterinary tech for a few years and loved seeing working crosses and large breeds, especially rarer ones.

160628_052813_0.jpeg This is my 11 year-old Black-mouth Cur/Pit-bull mix, 75 pound hog hunting dog, she is a natural born hog dog, I never had to train her. When she catches a hog she grabs it in the throat area and will NOT let go until I force her to release it.

Catahoula is a pretty solid choice. Guy I used to go hunt hogs with had a lot, but he had a dynamic duo that could run a 200 lb boar with few problems, and if you couldn't find them in time they would most likely take care of the hog themselves, especially if they ran it into a river
