Good outcome, poor planning.

A family friend took her 8mo old daughter out hiking yesterday. She was stressed out at home and that led to her not really paying attention since she'd "been hiking here so many times".

In just a tee shirt and shorts with nothing but her half dead cellphone (luckily she had the baby properly clothed and wrapped in a blanket) she headed off with only her very sick husband knowing where they'd went.

After several hours and right at dark, she managed to just get enough of a cell call out to her sister to say she was in trouble but not where or any other info. Her mom rushed to her house and woke up her husband and he told her where she'd gone. They then all rushed over to try and find her.

Long story shorter, S&R found her about 9pm, cold but safe.

I'm glad they were found safe. I would like to help turn this into a teachable moment without coming across as preachy or a "know it all", because I certainly don't know it all.

    Any advice?

What is wrong with being preachy? Seems like a preachable moment to me.

Preach and preach more and then tell all her friends.

Lack of situational awareness has killed many and resulted in casualties for SAR along with years of mental health sequela from having located fatalities.

I agree with above , when it's a life OR TWO on the line being judged or causing offense shouldn't even be on the radar. That was a serious near miss

you may not know it all, neither do I, but we know enough to NOT DIE in most situations. And you can teach that. Gently enough I bet that a person who’s found themselves in a dire situation like that would be willing to listen, to learn. “He who saves one..saves the world in time.” :) Go to it amigo.

Sounds like she just needed to go for a walk around the block and not a hike, due to the stress and taking the baby along.
