I think I’m getting the new Excalibur Assassin for bow hunting out of a blind. I’m going to keep my Mathews Heli-M of course for hunting out of my stands but for the blinds the x-bow makes sense. I’m going recurve for the simplicity and the fact that I can swap a string in the field should I ever damage it.

Crossbow and blind is probably my new favorite. I just have an old Horton with a single pin. Nothing fancy but it is an absolute tack driver.

@Boker55 whats the furthest range you shoot it out to? I’m hoping to be lethal to 50 and shoot targets out to 100.

Miss my crossbows. Had a Barnett and a PSE. Newer cross bows are STUPID fast. Sooo much fun. Enjoy bro

Thanks brother Ramos. The recurves aren’t as fast as the compounds but the simplicity and the rugged nature of them is what drew me in to the Assassin. There are compounds out there that end up being 10” wide (or possibly less) when drawn and offer bolt speeds of over 400fps. This tank launches them at a rated 360fps but will more realistically be around 345-350.

From corner to corner of my backyard is about 35 yards which is the furthest I’ve shot. Wouldn’t hesitate to shoot at a deer at 50 if it was standing still and broadside.

I bought a low end Barnett compound on sale at Cabela’s a few years ago. Then got a deal on a Zeiss crossbow scope, the scope/mounts that came with the bow were junk. I can get decent accuracy at 50 yards across my yard and have taken deer at 40 yards with it. The scope has a BDC type reticle and is adjustable for arrow speed.

It’s great for shooting out of the blind but the ergonomics are like carrying a boat anchor thru the woods. I don’t carry it cocked, I load it in the blind and use a decocking arrow just outside when I leave.

I try to limit my shots to 50 yards max, preferably 40 or under. Even with modern crossbows, the arrow is still relatively slow. At longer range a deer has enough time to react to the shot and increase the odds of a wounding shot rather than a clean kill.

This for me as well. Max is 40 for me. Ive got about a 4" drop from 20-40 so im comfortable with that and the speed.

Good stuff fellas. Appreciate it. This will be my first crossbow so I’m curious about everyone else’s experiences

I’ve shot my uncle’s and enjoyed it. I’m a Mathews man and love shooting my Heli-M out to 60yds but I didn’t like shooting it out of my uncle’s short blind. This Assassin is definitely going to be a game changer for me

Turns out it’s supposed to be getting delivered tomorrow! I hope it’s true so I can let the air out of something this weekend maybe.

20, 30, 40, 40. Not bad for just breaking it out and it being my first time being able to sit and tinker with one. The 20 and 30 were standing freehand. The 40’s were leaning on a chair.

No sir. I wish it was! I’m gonna buy a recurve for small game as well as bow fishing eventually.

Fast bow MOS. Nice acceptable group for 20-40.

Thanks Strig. I will tighten them up as I practice more. I’m a better shot with my Mathews but having a scope and a trigger will let me get super tight groups soon.
