The long and the short of my pitch is I really like the ESEE 4! Not to big not to small... That said I cannot give you a good reason to drop the money on the stainless other then I am not really a fan of the uncoated... If it came down to one or the other as the ONLY option I would take the stainless.... I personally would recommend the original coated version and strip back as much as you see neccasery... I just CAN NOT love having no coating under and around the scales...

Totally get not liking no coating under the scales. It's my biggest issue with a lot of knives (even with permanently affixed scales, the epoxy seal only lasts so long with rough use...).

I generally use pure beeswax under the scales on my stripped blades, but I'm probably going to start using a clear spray polyurethane.

Thing for me, is I just can't stand having the thick coating on under the scales... Hence the uncoated being my favored option.

So, after much deliberation, I settled on a stainless 4 with micarta and a black sheath. Also ordered 1 spare green sheath, and 1 kydex sheath.

    Rather looking forward to it.

I agree, 1095 for sure. As long as you keep the blade oiled it'll be fine

Good choice. Under the scales will rust like crazy if you get it wet, especially with pourous micarta that holds water.

Lmao, no. I was chasing a custom (a Murray Carter) that would have required the proceeds of the Winkler.

Decided on the 4 though. So I'm rather open on options as far as the Winkler goes now. Technically I could keep it (until I decide I can't live without a Carter blade again:rolleyes:) or sell it to someone who'd appreciate it and use the proceeds for something else (I have a number of soft goods I could use).

So I ordered some stock scales from esee and they arrived today. This is my first time ordering from esee directly also. But they came in a nice yellow envelope, which was good to see. However... Being esee they should know that we're going to open the packages with a knife right? So I grab my esee 3, find a good place to slice it open, and poof! Fluff everywhere!! Now I really do appreciate the care in using a well padded envelope, I wasn't expecting to have fluff flying around. But my kitty thanks you for it lol.

I know it’s just Walmart... Any store thou that is selling school supplies Especiallu any store that devotes as much room as Walmart... In my opinion you should hope atleast that they would have the supplies that the local schools actually need! You would hope if they found out they needed a certain color or type of item they would hopefully order extras.

For example we have 3 local school districts that are within about 10 miles of each other and another one about as close... In the grades K-4 in ALL 4 districts students are reguired to have colored plastic folders.... Each grade reguires a different amount and combination of colors...

    So yah...
