I did a quick look and could not see if we have done this thread yet here and I could find anything specifically.

Being the hairy chested woodsmen we are ;) I am sure that there is a large percentage of us that have a petrol driven leg eater. So what have you got and why that one ??

Me I currently have a well flogged 021 Stihl, it’s about 23yo and still going strong. I had it away last trip and decided I wanted something a little bigger when I am not just chopping a load of wood for the fire. I stumbled upon an 038 Magnum with two bars and eight chains (plus files and assorted tools)bin ePrey. Pick up only off in a small bush town (which excluded most buyers). The town is where I grew up and where my best friend still lives. He is just coordinating to collect it all.

In another life (after selling Harleys for a couple of years) I managed a Gun Shop, but we also dealt in outdoor power equipment and clothing. We had a workshop out the back so I saw almost every brand of saw at some time in pieces. We dealt in several brands but only actively pushed Stihl and Husky. The workshop gremlins were also torn between those two brands as well but mostly came down to Stihl.

My old man passed this one along to me a few years back. It's all the beast I ever wish to work with... 4.4hp in a saw ain't nothing to sneez at. He was still cutting firewood and splitting it all by hand well into his 60s.

I had the exact same saw until I moved house last month. I don't have any need for it here so I gave it away. Plenty of kick from that baby!

Ever seen chainsaw racing ? Back in the day we sponsored a guy who did so. Husky had just released a new 120cc saw and we tricked one out for him to compete with....

My mate collected the 038 Mag for me last weekend. He is smitten with it !!! I am up there to visit in 10 days or so and suspect I will have to fight it off him !!! In fact he went online and found an electronic copy of the User manual for the saw, he sent me a copy with the "Operator" section including "Physical Condition" highlighted. Specifically it says.... "You must be in good physical condition and metal health and not under the influences of any substances (drugs, alcohol) which may impair vision, dexterity or judgement". He noted that I failed this required standard in a number of ways an, as he was my friend and cared about me, he would, in good conscious, be unable to deliver me the saw :D :D

Yeah... the bigger saws are no joke, lots of power and things can go wrong in a hurry.

Even to the most experienced operators !!! When I was selling saws we dealt with number of guys working in the logging industry here and sadly injuries were common. I am FAR from an expert or experienced Sawman but I know just enough to be a) dangerous ;) :D and b) cringe at some of the things you see online/youtube !! A big kickback or such and someone will be needing their head/arm/leg sewn back on !

I ran an 038 a couple of weeks back when my 445 quit running in the middle of the day. They are a hand full. If you don't have any buy a set of chaps and wear steel toed boots. With full chisel chain an 038 is about twice as fast as a 455 through a 24" beech log.
