I saw a Griswold dutch oven at the antique store this past weekend. They were asking $155 for it. I know Griswold is good stuff, but I'm clueless as to what it's worth. It had been seasoned, but the inside was extremely pitted.
Not worth it. It won't be that much better than a new lodge, especially if it's pitted. At least that's my opinion.
This is a good overview of cooking with cast iron. Most of it is for beginners but it's got some good stuff for everyone. http://survivalathome.com/beginners-guide-to-cast-iron-cookware/
When it comes to cast iron, just how much closer to the proverbial widget can you get? It is a piece of cast iron for Pete's sake. The wow factor of owning your relatives old pieces is one thing that is understandable. It is an heirloom with an emotional attachment. But otherwise, iron is iron. I'm not paying up for the precision moving parts, crucible steel, exotic design, etc. that isn't there.
That's why I think Finex and Borough Furnace are ridiculous. Having said that, I have a set of Le Creuset It's like anything else. Why does a guy need 4 cars, 2 motorcycles, 30 knives, 15 pairs of shoes, 10 watches, and a dozen shotguns? Because it's America and need is something none of us know anything about. It's all about more, more, more. Earn more so you can spend more so you can have more which makes you spend more so you have a place to put all your more. That's the American way. If you're not unnecessarily materialistic, you're just not patriotic. Period.
Something that I do (and will) pay for in cast iron is interesting or task specific shapes: squares, griddle tops, bacon press, dutch oven with legs, etc.
Anyone in Dawsonville, GA or visiting the Moonshine Festival going on there this weekend check these guys out in the swap meet area. Had a bit of cast iron for sale.
Wow. How'd you like to haul that out and set up and take down every show? I'd probably be offering some good deals as the show was closing....
I don't know who this cat or why he dressed like the British are coming but I like his video. This is a good Dutch Oven 101
200 year old pot roast recipe from the man in the pointed hat. It looks awesome. Now, if I can just get someone to carry my cast iron for me when I go camping. @Bushman5 should like this one:
Dang, you Texans really like your cast iron: Dutch Oven is the official cooking implement for the state of Texas: http://www.npr.org/2005/04/22/4616266/texas-pays-tribute-to-the-dutch-oven
I get it's period dress. I just don't understand why someone wants to dress in period dress. Although maybe I'll try it this week and see what happens. I might drive up to the store.
Cooked some eggs this morning and they kinda stuck to the bottom of my big lodge for some reason. So once I got it cleaned I figured I would do a few seasoning sessions on my 3 skillets.
Cooked some fish this past weekend. Also cooked some cowboy potatoes all in my Lodge cast iron ovens .
