i read a quote a while back that said "a well trained individual needs only a knife to survive." what are your thoughts on that?

    Depends on the situation.

I'd say it depends on the environment and the circumstances. Some places you might need a good deal more to thrive. Personally I would want at least a water container(steel) and a fire kit.

A well trained intelligent individual will have more than just a knife.

totally agree. A knife can make the tools for fires, a knife can make the containers for water, a knife can be used to make tools to kill trap your food, or kill it for you. It can process firewood rapidly compared to not having a knife

a knife can be a utility tool, or it can kill (animal or hostiles).

A knife shortens the time it takes to do all the above.

    a knife is a morale booster .

but what if you don't have all that kit, and have just a knife.......

not to hype the Rambo first blood thing.....but.........he went from lockup , to fighting his way out, grabbing a big knife and then cutting a tarp up for clothing , wire for a belt and made a spear for killing food. As well as man traps.......

Well, the natives in the Amazon basin region tend to do everything with a machete. For most of us mere mortals we require a little more equipment. ;)

Depending on the location and circumstances I would like to have much more than just a knife. But some 60 years ago I would take a group of scouts out in the woods with only the clothes on their backs and a 'boy scout' knife each. We had a grand time and never had anyone get sick or injured, but they sure learned a lot of survival skills. Now days that would not be possible. A good knife is a good start but depending on where you are and how long you expect to survive, something more would be nice.

Environment will really be the deciding factor if a knife is enough. It is certainly a good start and obviously most useful, but I can think of a number of location where a knife alone would not be the means to a happy end.

Andy you are absolutely right. We did the survival trips in the spring to fall and in an area I was familiar with. But a knife is a VERY good start. It was fun to see a bunch of boys learning how to get along without the things they were use to having. It was also encouraging to see how fast they learned and how willing they were to experiment. All of my children and grandchildren know how useful a knife can be and they always have at least one with them, now day the older ones also have something else [usually a Glock].

The will to survive, adapt and overcome are better tools than a knife.

I don't think I have seen that primitive guy on Youtube use a knife yet. That guy has way more skills beyond basic survival. Im really impressed with his skills in using clay and knowledge of his natural resources.
