Try this and get back to me. Pour Bulleit into a glass and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. Tottally different taste.

That one on the left is a wine, yes? Can't quite make out the label, but looks French.

Does Scotland produce wines? Seems a little wet and cool there for grapes.

Yes it's a Marquis De Calon 2006 from Bordeaux. It cost more then ether bottle of whisky. Scotland doesn't really produce any wine of note.

I have barely tried French reds (I don't drink any white wine), my understanding is that one is a Cab Cav/Merlot blend ? Our local varieties are world class, I grew up in the horse end of a valley famous for race horses and wine. I do have a bottle of 84/86 Penfolds Grange here that needs drinking....maybe not at a Sunday BBQ though... ;)

From what I can find online it's Merlot 55%, Cabernet Sauvignon 45%. The French don't put the grape verity on the bottle often so it's not always that easy to find what in the wine! I mainly drink Bordeaux reds (when I can afford it) just because that's what I like and I'm used to. Old vine Zinfandel's are pretty stunning as well. I've never tried and decent Australian wines, I should amend that I guess! If you have good wines locally then it's doesn't make much sense to ship other wine half way round the world to drink. I'd do the same.

This thread needs more wine photos. Anyone else like a bottle of decent wine?

We export lots of pretty nice wine if you know what to look for. Years ago (90s) I bought a lovely Hunter Valley red in a supermarket in Oregon for less than I had paid at the cellar door ! I enjoyed it (as did my Seppo friends) but was annoyed LOL

I can see how that might not be fun. I have the same thing here when you visit a distillery. I can normally get the whisky between £10-15 cheaper online than at the distillery shop.

Yes, absolutely, we need some good wines in here. And as long as we're at it, some good beers, too, perhaps.

Keyword: good. No MD 20-20 or Busch Lite.

I'm a red wine guy mostly too, 'cept for light fish -- then I'll go with a dry white. (No Chardonnay for me, please.) I'll have to dig back in my memory for a memorable example -- I've been too poor for a long while to buy good wine. (And I don't think I ever drank a Cab worth drinking for less than $20/bot.) Merlot's are better at lower prices.

Beer? There really is only one for me if I have a choice: IPA. Which one? I'll try all of them and let you know.

Export issues: I had no idea. That's outrageous.

Scary how hard it's becoming to get hold of a good bottle of MacAllan for reasonable money!

@Ryno , can you give us a sense (as in smell, er nose, taste, etc) of what makes that Macallan 12 so desirable?

I don't doubt it for a sec. Just curious to know the characteristics.
Still learning about scotch, looking forward to affording it again.

I'm not one for giving nonsensical reviews on what whisky tastes like as from my experience it's all very subjective and open to interpretation.

It's smooth, smokey and has a sweetness from the sherry is as far as I would dare to elaborate without being drawn into searching for nostalgic tastes which it could invoke.

As for it's appeal, MacAllan is a known brand for quality and collectors. Aged bottles of it's 18yr old certainly hold a premium.

When deciding which bottle to go for, I was offered this year's 18yr old bottling for £270... I'm sure in 10 years time it could be quite the sound investment for a collector, but I was in the market for drinking, not an ornimant to collect dust.

One more thing of note which is also dictating the prices is the drop in Sterling since the Brexit vote. This has increased the demand World wide. When you have such increased demand, partially from Asia, it skews the prices in the domestic markets as they struggle to keep up with demand.

State minimum price in Michigan for The Macallan 12 is $62.99, which you can find it for pretty easily. I'm down to a few glasses left in my bottle, but I might splurge on the 15 year and drink it throughout the holidays.
