Of course someone has. I've made a bunch for the Becker knives and now I've got this ESEE 6HM that I'm deeply lustful for, at a primitive level. This could be the knife that brings me out of handle making retirement. I've got some ridiculous Fiddleback maple for the project. The reason for the thread, the holes and the hardware? What is the tool or tools used to get that hole and screw taper correct? Any thoughts and/or comments are welcome. Feel free to post up any picture's of custom jobs you have done or seen. Truth be told I'd buy a set if I could find what I wanted, Making these things is a dick punch.
I use a simple chamfer bit after the initial holes are drilled to allow the screws to recess into the handle/scale. I have not made any for the 6hm, but these I made for the 4hm.
I would think something like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-Power-Groove-Countersink-Set-5-Piece-AR2008G/205193155 They also make countersink bits with out the pilot bit if you wanted to do it separately.
Thanks for the picture's and the replies folks. I'm embarrassed to say I think I already have all the tools to make it go. I just needed help getting my head right about the project. I gotta get my belt sander back. Doe's anyone know if pre made slabs of burlap micarta can be purchased?
I would imagine that burlap micarta could be found, probably on ebay. I was actually just thinking about making some myself a few days ago.
I just found this with a quick search. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Burlap-Mica...5-034-x-5-034-Scales-/112165749367?rmvSB=true
If I remember correctly... That Burlap Micarta is some NaSTY $hit! Like practically full respirator/ face mask and more... I would poke around the DIY section of the forum I believe we have some folks in there that have talked about #1 custom scales and # 2 Micarta safety issues... I Believe @esee6&3 could probably shed some light on the safety issues...
I've made and installed a few pairs of wood handles on my ESEE's. I'll post up some pics one of these days when I get a chance to take some.
That worked. The top and bottom ones are green with Buckeye Burl and the center one is tan with Walnut Burl.
Some beautiful work in this thread! My Izzies in walnut pants here. Used one of those ball shaped stone Dremel bits for the tapered part after drilling the holes. Works perfectly.
Shade Tree Customs is a site that I've shopped. They have some unique micarta slabs and offer small and large slabs. I have a set of scales that I'm currently making with some linen micarta that I found for cheap on ebay. I'm giving it a go with that first to test the water before I commit to pricier materials though. It's been a fun experience so far but there's more to it than I assumed there would be.
