I guy I went to Highschool with is hiking the entire thing from bottom to top. I never realized it was THAT long. More power to him, I hope he makes it. He either left today or first thing in the morning - I can't remember. https://www.facebook.com/Stuffchrisdoes/posts/1236020306474770:0
Thru hiking huh? I got lost on YouTube once watching hiker trash videos. Apparently lots of folks do it!
I will do it one day. I've hiked the bottom 40 miles. And different parts of the trail in PA. It's a perfect activity. Very simple. Get up, take care of your gear, walk, go to sleep, repeat. There's nothing more cathartic than the AT. It's like entering a whole other world of characters and languages. My trail name is Expat. Weird, huh? Maybe the Expat gathering should be hiking the trail...
I have decided I will never do it. Too many damn folks. I like the less traveled trails like the Benton McKaye.
My daughter wants to do the AT. Given the opportunity I'd much rather do the Continental Divide Trail.
Well, ideally, I'd rather just do a lap around Southpark Mall in Charlotte. A/C and lots of comfy chairs.
I have over 180 miles of it and have the written plan for my thru hike but life happened before the hike. Just finished a good book about the trail the other day "Where's the next shelter" by Gary Sizer. It was a good read.
Benton Mackay is 300 miles of solitude and one of the most beautiful trails I've been on. Haven't done it all but will.
Must've been a portion of the Trail then, 'cuz he'd be gone for only a month or so. He retired recently, so he'll have all the time in the world to hike it.
Truth is, I hike until I start hearing northern accents in the distance and reverse course when I see the jolly colors. Who knows how many miles I have hiked perpendicular to the trail when trapped.
