I was thinking about trying one out this winter to make kindling for my wood stove. Anyone else use one? What are your thoughts?

Chris from Prepareind101 designed a froe Schrade will be making this year. Looks interesting. Should be affordable too so not much to loose on it. Here's the video to the froe.

From chopping a lot of wood in the past I can see how a froe would be handy. An ax is good for heavy duty splitting but if you want to get smaller tinder a froe would be nice to use especially if you want to save the edge on your nice knives.

It's definitely a useful tool if you prefer to baton over using a hatchet. I like both so I use both methods. I just can't stand watching that guy on that channel. I got like 2 minutes into the video and had to turn it off.

I agree. I typically just keep an eye out for items he reviews that I might be interested in.

Used one to make cedar shingles for a project many years ago. Great for splitting wide thin boards, if you use the proper wood.

using a real froe, the vertical handle gives you a lot of leverage for twisting the wood apart between strokes as you baton it.

Its a great tool. I got mine from Country Workshops. Its near Ashville, but I think he is closing shop soon. If you are doing any type of green woodworking, chair making, spoon making, etc., its a really handy tool. Its mainly used for splitting wood in a controlled manor. They used to use them a lot for making roof shingles. I've never used mine for that. But any time I'm working on a spoon blank or chair parts, I use mine to split wood into more manageable sections.

You can make a useable one from a car spring with a ring welded on one end for a handle. The one that Drew Langsner (Country Workshops) sells is nice because of the wedge shape it has. It comes without a handle. I think Lee Valley also sells one. Gransfors Bruks makes a cool one but its very expensive.

Check out Langsners book "Green Woodworking" for good info on its use.

And I wanted to add that I have never used mine for kindling. It would work. I've never tried it.

My apologies to anyone who likes him, but I think he's a total asshat. If I could figure out how to block his channel from ever showing up on my iPad I'd do it in a heartbeat. It's a shame, 'cause it looks like a decent tool, but I can't buy anything he promotes.

This is exactly why I would like to try one out. I do enjoy batoning, but it seems like a froe would have an advantage.

Same. Has no clue what he's talking about and, for the most part, uses **** gear. But he speaks to the "preppers" of the world stacking junk gear in their moms garage buying $20 fantasy swords and chopping watermelons and water bottles on camera.

If the zombies attack I want to be with that guy. Not because he can protect me. Because I'm pretty sure even an old cripple like me could out run him.

you are both correct - he's a big enough asshat, he should be a sombrero.
I've seen him piss off both LT Wright and Ethan Becker.

I have no idea what the Schrade "Froe" has to do with a froe. Looks more like a sharpened piece of sheet metal, which defeats the entire point.
