I've been looking for a new toy to play with and have narrowed down my decision between a Sig Sauer P226 and a Smith and Wesson 686 plus. It would mainly be a range toy but I guess it could serve as a home defense gun too.

I was also looking at the Legion series P226 but I'm not too sure it justifies the extra $$.

    Thoughts?

I have the legion 226 and its my favorite.
The sights, color, finish, and the trigger, OH THE TRIGGER is just amazing....

    That would be my pick....

You might look at the 320's as well if your leaning toward Sig.

Well that's really two firearms on opposite sides of the spectrum

Your title says new not first so without our knowing what else you have I would say go with the one that deviates most from what you already own.

If you have a diverse collection I would say go Sig. I've liked just about every sig I've shot. I don't own a 226 but I've put a few hundred rounds done the pipe and it's a great pistol. There are a ton of options out there so you can get the look you like with great aftermarket support as well. Can be made to be a true competition gun and still serve as a legit home defense weapon

Actually it would be the beginning of a new collection, I got rid of almost all my guns a few years ago because knives weren't costing me as much lol, but I've since fallen off the wagon...

Those were just the two guns that seem to call to me, 686 is a very sleek looking gun, but I like the looks of the Sig too much to pass up, I'm going to go out Friday and hold them both and see which one fits me best

You can't go wrong with either but damn the Sig is sweet! I had a couple of Sig Sauer's prior to my divorce and hope that someday I can replace them. The Legion series has caught my many of times.

A 686 is a solid choice that it is hard to go wrong with. Many can argue the point (legitimately so) about other firearm that can do things better, yep sure, but at the same time the 686 will do them quite satisfactorily. I have two (a four and a six inch) and they are truly a pair of my favorites.

I am going to add a Legion to my collection one day, but I keep getting distracted by other interesting pistols along the way. Yeah, transferring your knife bug to firearms isn't going to simplify your life, but guns have something knives just can't reproduce (The loud, satisfying BANG!). :D

I was raised on a 6" barreled 686 and my dad's target reloads in .38spl and .357mag hunting loads. Only handgun I really shot until he gave me my Ruger MKII my senior year. I will have to add one to my collection just because of the memories.

I had wanted one of the stainless elites but im not a huge fan of the beaver tail, that's what pushed me more towards the Legion. Although the 686 looks reallllly nice looking. I'm leaning more towards the Sig right now but I don't know why. Hopefully I'll bring one home Friday so I can post some pics.
