The memories of General Vladimir Vazov - the Hero of Doiran is what I'm reading now. A fascinating figure, worshipped by his soldiers and highly respected by his enemies. WW1 trench fighting diary can really give you goosebumps while reading it.

It makes me thankful for living in the time we live, despite all its flaws.

I’ve wanted to read this for about 30 years (since I saw the movie). About halfway through now. Great read.

This is a neat little biography on a pretty interesting American hero. Originally from Maine, Soule was a jayhawker in the days of Bleeding Kansas, he helped to operate part of the Underground Railroad, he was present at Charles Town, WV after John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry (he snuck into the jail and offered a plan to break Brown out, but Brown refused, and was subsequently hung), and most significantly, he was present at the Sand Creek Massacre in southeast Colorado, where he refused orders to attack the peaceful camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho (mostly populated by women, children, and old men). A captain, he stayed the hands of the company of 100 men he commanded, and bore witness to the tragedy, later testifying against those responsible , despite having received death threats were he to go forward. Weeks later he was shot and killed on the streets of Denver. The subtitle is apt; in 26 years this guy did indeed live a life of moral courage, especially during a time in history where morality and legality were oftentimes at odds. Today the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes still honor his legacy of integrity, bravery, and compassion.

Last book of the year down. Hadn’t read this since I was a boy. Still relevant and powerful. Happy new year, folks.

Not a lot of time to read a proper book lately, but I am checking these awesome encyclopedias I got for my birthday - Bulgarian Fishing and Hunting encyclopaedias. Lots of great stuff there.

Here’s what I’ve read so far this year, minus a couple I returned to the library. Been on a kick to learn more about Columbus and the Age of Discovery. Fascinating stuff.
