Refurbishing the ole fire pit. Starting with a new metal insert from the Fire Ring King. Going for new blocks tomorrow to line the outside perimeter. Really excited to have some more cooking options with this thing. I am literally going to consume hundreds of Busch Lts around this thing!!!
That's a killer set up. I visited that link and those inserts are nice. I know a guy who could also use one.
If you pull out one of the lower bricks and set up a leaf blower there you can make your fire super hot. @SEMO has all the great ideas.
Finally found some time in between projects to take advantage of the 3.5 acres of woods at our new house. Practiced making feather sticks and getting the shavings lit with just a fire steel.
New Fire Pit, I'm working on a new fire pit. I found this in the woods a few weeks ago, Finally got it dragged back to the house and started modifying. No real good way to clamp a guide bar to it. So I had to cut freehand, with slightly better than a homeowner grade torch. Not perfect, but not bad either. How that old rusty steel did pop and spit. This is where I'm at now, need to get some stones or blocks and build a foundation. Then I have to mow the lawn. There is some weird stuff starting to stick up in it.
Fire Pit, part 2, It doesn't have to be perfect, but it has to be pretty close, The local transfer station provided me with the ash catcher tray and bottom grill from an old Weber Charcoal Grill, I made sure to get the blocks in enough to support the tray, First fire in Michigan, So I guess it's Official, I am a Michigander, I have plans for a grill and other accessories, but that's for another day. So far I'm pleased with the progress. The wetting down went well.
Some more backyard bushcraft today, making sticks and curls fine enough to light with a firesteel The BK-9 did just fine (as expected)
Inspired me while doing some yard work. What better way to get rid of downed branches. I’ll be posting some backyard fun shortly
Inspired, and with the strong verbal motivation from the wofe to cut the grass on my only day off, I decided to throw a bit of back yard bushcraft in while obliging her requests. I gathered a few sticks from the yard. Used my Garberg to make a baseball sized pile of shavings from the dry stuff and set it all up in an a framed still of fire lay. Three strikes of my firesteel.com ferro rod (which is over 10 years old) and bam. I got a decent self sustaining fire. It would have done much better had I added real fuel sized wood to it. But I decided to keep adding thumb sized green wood and pencil sized dry wood to it. This made for a sweet combo of hot fire and a good bit of smoke that kept the biting flies of my shirtless back while cutting the grass.
