    Howdy all,

I have the itch to replace my pocket knife after no changes for a couple years. Been curious about the bugout since it was released. Any opinions for it as an EDC?

    Thanks in advance

it looks very tempting to me as well -- but I picked up a hogue ritter a few months back and it seems silly to have both.

The plastic handled models feel super cheap and flimsy. Can't speak on any of the other variants with different handles.

I like the blade a lot. Good geometry, good steel, great slicer. Really a great blade.

I dislike the plastic handles. While I’ve never heard of anyone breaking them, they feel very cheap. They are also too thin for me ergonomically (obviously, that’s personal preference).

Adding G10 via the customizer or aftermarket scales may resolve those issue and make this a fantastic knife. But you are then at the $200-$235 price point and that is just more than I’m willing to pay for a pocket knife.

I've got a hankering for one myself. Dunno when I'll get around to buying one though. Got a lot of stuff going on here right now.

I’ve handled them at the local knife store and love them. Just a little out of my price range

I enjoy mine profusely. I swapped the scales for titanium ones by Rockscale Designs, plus a titanium backspacer. It added a minimal amount of weight, a good bit of price, and a ton of rigidity. I'll snap some photos in a moment.

My son picked up a Mini Bugout yesterday, and it's fantastic as-is. The plastic scales feel much nicer with the shorter span they cover on the Mini.

Short version of my rambling below: it's a good knife design. If you like thumb studs get one.

    The rambling:
I like the blade and handle shapes (simple and pointy with a neutral grip).
I like the size and the clip it comes with.

I think it's one of the best folder designs that ANY company has come out with in a long time. While everyone else was trying to redesign the wheel with crazy angles and thicknesses and such Benchmade gave folks a simple, lightweight tool. Just one with a stupid name.

With that said, I've owned two and passed them both on due to personal preferences. I can't seem to make peace with thumb studs after so long using Spydercos and waved knives.
If someone were to offer a good wave add on, ideally with an oversized thumb stud included or a modified "hood" type thing like Spyderco I would probably buy another one.
I did add a big after market thumbstud that really helped when using the last one with gloves.

I picked up a mini bugout about a week and a half ago and love it. It is the perfect size edc folder for me (but I would recommend the full size bugout for anyone with wider hands). The blade shape/size is great and it really is a lightweight knife!

Just got this one a few days ago.
I got mine with black G10 and M4

Even with G10 its super light weight.

    So far I love it.

Thanks for all the input. I wish it wasn’t so cheap feeling with the plastic because part of the appeal is the price. Not looking for spend $200 at the moment.

Just handled a neighbor's Bugout for the first time last week, and it really is a sweet spot EDC. Too long for my state, but still awesome.

I’m assuming that was the full sized Bugout that was too long?

Indeed. My 3" long state has a 3" (concealed) carry limit. And arguing the point for non-concealed isn't a conversation I want to have. Easier to be all-under all the time.

I'm betting the mini-bug would have too small a handle. The mini-grip handle is already too small (upgraded mine with aftermarket scales to satisfy). But I really did like it. In a 4" limit world, there are so many good ~3.125-3.675" EDC folders available, and I'd put the Bugout in my top 10. Maybe 15. :)

Yeah unless you have narrower hands the mini bugout's handle will be too small. When the guy at Smoky Mountain Knife Works handed it too me to look at we had a brief discussion about how it was a three finger knife for him...
