Tonight’s ember. Was trying to “float” the drill but couldn’t quite get it there. Couple passes down and the ember was made. Ah well....
@Caleb O that's awesome. I may have to carve out a bite piece and give it a try. @Strigidae that's an incredibly valid question.
Gotta get good and dehydrated. But seriously, just a quick suck down any saliva before you start and your good. I’ve never had trouble getting an ember in under 25 seconds once I figured out the “rhythm” of this method.
Hand drill and bow drill from last week. Trying to knock out at least a couple of embers a week currently.
It’s called the Garcia by Field and Steel. Wanted a full tang pukko to take with me to BOSS this summer. So that’s what I ended up with.
@Caleb O Please tell us about your coal catcher? Where did you get it from? Size? Pros? Cons? What would you do different? I am asking as I would like to make my own.
For sure! This is a little flat copper coal catch made for me by James Gibson. I’d say it’s a little bigger than a 50 cent piece (not including the little handle). Pros is you can wear it around you neck and/or it packs flat when out and about. It doesn’t burn thru, and it one less thing to make when out and about. Cons is that it gets hot. If you let the ember grow for a while, that little coal catch gets very toasty. Enough that if you grab it on the wrong bit it’ll let ya know.
