Let’s talk SAR pack first-aid kits. I’m curious what others are carrying and why. With my very limited medical knowledge, this is what I’m carrying in a pouch sized around 8” x 3” x 5”

    Trauma shears
    RISE compact splint
    SAM splint
    Ace wrap
    Epi Pen
    Medical tape
    Low dose aspirin
    Glucose paste
    Small roll of duct tape
    Tourniquet
    Compression bandage
Various bandaids in a small boo boo kit
    Small roll of gauze
    Gloves
    CPR disposable face shield
    Waterproof notepad, pen & sharpie

.... do you store the kit in your vehicle ? How does the Epi Pen deal with heat etc ?

Depends on who you ask. I have heard conflicting answers on this from doctors. So, my question would be what if you have a serious allergy and have to carry an epi pen, do you only hike when the temperature are below 86 degrees F or do you carry your epi pen in an ice chest attached to your back? Short answer, I will take my chances.

..... I of course utilise the services of a team or porters to carry me and my equipment on journeys so the weight of an ice chest is not unreasonable.. ;) Now seriously.... :D I understand that of course carrying one in ambient heat is required (it should be a little cooler inside the pack) more worried about a kit that remains stored in the vehicle with the epi pen going through significant heat/cool cycles. All that said, yes, no question that it should be carried.

Not for SAR but day hunts and hikes carried in a red stuff sack because they are cheap
    4 inch ace bandage
    3 inch rolled gauze
    4x4 gauze
    2x2 gauze
    Steri strips
    Trauma shears
    Teeezers
    Izula
    One inch medical tape
    Emergency blanket
    Quick clot packet
    Mole skin

also on the pack are clean game bags and paracord. So never got a splint cause I’d just sacrifice a bag and make one. Same for a splint. Lots of wood where we go. Also carry snacks and liquid IV for electrolytes and sugar.

i carry one and so does my son when we go out so everything is doubled up.

I should get a tourniquet but never did. Any recommendations?

I may have more in the kit but I’m at work and in a video meeting. Riveting stuff I could hardly break away to write this. I’ll edit if I forgot anything.

edit to add also need to get some petroleum dressings to throw in.

Despite the meeting that I should be paying attention to... looks like there are insulated carriers for Eli pens. The one my buddy Bing found was Thermal Red Ana-Tote. 29.95 on one site. Out of stock on the big South American river. Pretty good reviews.

Not exactly a "first aid" but definitely a morale booster was keeping 2 chicken flavor packets from the Ramen noodle soup packs in my kit.

Absolutely. A pack of M and Ms can sometimes go along way for a patient.
