Well, new Damascus Izula owner. Just cut up a banana for my imp, and noticed a color change on the blade. Surely from the acid in the banana. Oiled it immediately, but there's still a small discoloration. Read post-banana that cutting up lemons is a bad idea. That makes sense. Anyone know what I can do? Thanks, Butch
Any carbon blade will discolor, or patina with use. If you want the blade to look new again you could re-etch it with ferric chloride acid. google search etching Damascus steel. personally, I like the patina that use gives a blade. Good luck with your venture.
Right on. I was shocked at the color change. Super fast. and I never thought of bananas as acidic... So, go cut the rest of the banana and spread out the patina? lol. Thanks.
I have never tried it on damascus, but it should polish out with something like flitz metal polish. I don't know if it would polish away the pattern though.
