Now is that the only range or place you can shoot on the island? I’m very interested in the laws there. Everyone says how hard it is to get a license there do you carry also or just rifle?

Thanks for the interest. Sorry for the kinda long post to come.

The range in the picture is the only range where we can shoot rifle and pistol. It has a 200 yard rifle range, 50 yard pistol range, LE range and a clays range. There is another private range for clays. At least that one is 5 min from my house.

The laws here are strict compared to some (most) places. Long guns need a permit to purchase but that permit lasts a year and can buy as much as you want. No mag limits. Can buy pretty much whatever you want though. Handguns require a permit for each one bought. 10 round mag limit no AR pistols or similar though.

All permits take 14 days minimum to process so it includes the mandatory wait period.

Carry is another story. Unless you are LE you’re not getting a carry permit. So the only time I can carry is open carry while pig hunting on certain areas. Even then I barely carry a pistol. 357 from a revolver in a valley makes me feel like my ears are bleeding. 30-30 is way better.

I can carry as big of a knife as I want around town as long as it’s not concealed though. Seen guys carrying 12 in Bowie’s and it’s all good.

found a neat little bee hive last weekend while out armed hiking. I was walking around looking for goats and deer and saw all this white stuff in the lava rocks and thought why did some idiot shove an air filter in a rock a mile away from the road? Lo and behold the air filter was a bee hive, lol. Looks like the bees found a nice little lava tube to build a home. No honey yet but I wouldn’t try to take it anyway.

todays harvest! We’ve been getting about this much weekly So our friends and neighbors have been quite happy to say the least. We have a great barter system in the neighborhood. When someone has something we all share. I hunt and have fruit trees. One Neighbor fishes and another likes to grow veggies so we are in good shape.

Good day today in the field. I really liked the colors on this one.

Once again a successful hunt for my son. He’s doing great with being patient and waiting for a good shot. This one was out at about 250 yds. Meat smells clean and he had a good amount of fat on him. When goats here don’t have enough water they get pretty stink.

My son and I had another successful hunt today. Small horns but lots of meat on this guy.

We were stalking a group of about 50 of his friend 300 yards away but he popped up 100 yards away coming out of a group of trees. My son made a beautiful double lung shot. Started driving home before 815.

We got stopped by two DLNR officers who were checking out a sketchy guy camping. We were good and had a nice talk with one of them. While the other was talking with Mr Sketchy. Has a nice talk about hunting and went on our way.

    I’m ready for a nap.

Picked this up yesterday from a local fisherman. Thought I’d share a before and after shot.

Fish is an Opakapaka and they live between about 100 to 900 feet down. It’s probably my favorite fish along with some of it’s deep water cousins. This guys about 7 pounds of deliciousness.

Steamed it Chinese style with cabbage, onion, ginger , garlic, salt, pepper and a salted turnip called chung choi. After it steams pour hot (really really hot) cooking oil over the skin to fry it a little Mmmmmmm. Turned out great!

went hunting yesterday and didn’t see anything so decided to check out a new area. It turned out to be a steep cinder filled hike. I fell 3 times in the way down when my feet slid out from under me. But I did get this:

If you zoom in toward the cloud that island is Kahoolawe. It’s uninhabited for good reason. Back when I was a kid (back in the 70s) we could watch flares falling from our house. The military used to use it for bombing practice and when the flares disappeared you could wait for the boom. Some of those bombs shook the house pretty good.

They’re now trying to clean up all the bombing material and unexploded ordinance. So no one can go on the island except for cultural learning by invite or cleanup.

There are a few safe places To land and camp. My daughter went there with her canoe club and loved it. She said it was beautiful and had a great time.

It really is my favorite part of the island. That’s why I keep going back. Hikers don’t go where we go, to much elevation and rough terrain so it’s very peaceful. Bird season starts in a few weeks so I’ll get some pictures of other areas within the same unit.

Today was my first attempt at bird hunting in probably 15 years. Got some great shots while I was out. About 4 hours and 2000 feet of elevation change

Found this cool cave that sits under a not running waterfall. When I got closer. Found a little grotto of ferns on the right side.

View close to the top when I turned around. The summit sits about 10,000 feet of elevation. This was about 7500.

Didn’t see any bird sign but found a sign... LOL out in the middle of nowhere. Up hill a little further is a sign warning about fiber optic cables. The lines are for the observatories at the summit.

We had another hunting trip this past weekend. Saw some animals but nothing we wanted to eat. Deer was the focus so we let the goats go.

This is Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve. Our buddy has a permit to go in since most of this area is closed off. Hunting is for ungulate control within the reserve boundaries. The reserve area is being expanded to eventually 3000 acres. Right now it’s probably about a quarter of that. Enjoy the pictures.

This is pretty much what the area we were in looks like. It’s the most recent lava flow for Maui so pretty rough.

In the lava field there are patches of trees that give a little shade and easier walking.

Kiawe (A type of mesquite) tree boundary of the lava flow. Much nicer to Walk on haha. We checked that area out but it’s a pretty narrow strip until you hit the actual boundary to the neighboring land.

Took a close up of the lava field. So if you stay on the lava field this is what you walk on. It’s basically tennis ball to watermelon sized chunks of cinder. It’s nice for the first couple of hours or so because it’s like a good deep foot massage. After 6 hours you feel all those accessory muscles that you don’t normally use walking just to stay upright.

    More scenery D064F570-0779-453F-B4A5-89F19A5D29B7.jpeg
Found a neat little rock with a natural hole in it. It’s basically a cut away of a lava tube but was busted out probably by a gas explosion during the lava flow. Not sure about that but in that area it’s the only explanation I could think of. That or my first thought was some one missed a deer and hit the rock haha.

Believe it or not they used to raise cattle out here. This is an old water trough from back I those days. It not that far back actually that’s steel pipe going into the trough.

Took a trip to Lanai on Monday for work So I figured I’d snap a few shots for everyone. So this is the island that is pretty much owned by Larry Ellison at least the majority of it. Enjoy the pictures.

The left side bay is the main hotel. During covid they were running a special. A week all inclusive for around 5 grand. Yeah I didn’t go. The bay is nice dolphins come in a lot and are fun to watch

That’s the airport. Small town for sure. Only about 3,000 people in the island.
    E82AB55D-8E7E-46DE-90A3-8EEADEC4F633.jpeg
The only town is right in the middle there. Sorry my picture is pretty bad, it’s the fuzzy white blob in the middle.
    DE45C017-5625-4339-8DF4-85A1D3847778.jpeg
Going back once a week for the next 4 weeks. I’ll try to get some other shots. Excellent hunting here. A lot of the people on the island eat deer year round. For residents they can hunt the private property hunting units for pretty cheap. For about the price of a good steak they can get 2 deer per hunter.

First hunt of the new year!!! Not the biggest out there but it’s in the cooler so I’m happy. Don’t worry I had the scope cover off when I was shooting. Put it back on because this area has a lot of super fine dust I didn’t want on the glass 9218B140-4752-4325-A140-074C60BB6F79.jpeg
Scenery picture of the Bog Island (Hawaii Island). Those are Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. The one you can’t see because it’s shorter is Kilauea and it been getting active the last few weeks with a large lava lake in its crater.

Haven’t posted here for a while but thought I’d share. Had the chance to make some pickled mango with my wife the other week. Yep mango. It’s a local delicacy here. Processed a 5 gallon bucket of green mango. We gave away 9 containers so far to friends and family.

A friend took us to a place that was in the family for over 100 years and is an orchard. With mango, avocado and citrus over 80 acres. Plan is to help them maintain the property and get to hunt there. In one day saw pigs, goats and deer. Beautiful place with lots of history. No game this trip but got lots of mango. 30 minutes to pick and 3 hours to process! But lots of people are happy so it’s worth it.
