Is there a way that i can tie bass fishing mono or floro straight to the fly line with a knot? Im just asking because id like to have 12 pound floro so it would be stronger and easier to rig up than tippet. Also, is there some kind of clip or something so you dont have to cut your line everytime you change flies?
Just got back from a weekend of fun on the river catching Cutties!! You can use a Nail Knot to tie leader to a fly line. Most newer lines come with a built in loop at the end that you connect with a loop on the leader, makes it really simple.
I'm thinking about getting started tying my own flies. I have a vise and tools picked out, just trying to narrow down some material and patterns to get started with. I mostly bass fish, so I was leaning towards a reliable crawfish and streamer pattern. Maybe a leech and poppers too. Anyone have recommendations?
find the pattern for Bill's craw. it has been bullet proof for smallies here in our Ozark streams https://www.feather-craft.com/bill-millers-crayfish-pattern-sheet http://www.geocities.ws/kafinlayson/Crayfish_Swaps/Crayfish_I/Directions/keith_finlayson.htm
This is exactly what I need! Right now I'm using a craw pattern purchased from the local fly shop. The guy that ties them hasn't delivered any in a while and I'm getting antsy.
Simple rabbit strip leaches are easy to tie and work awesome out here. You can buy rabbit strips in almost any color including two tone and weight them in a way that works for the water you are fishing. You can also tie them with weed guards, stinger hooks, and even rattles
Yeah I wanted to make sure I got decent enough stuff to not leave me wanting for an upgrade for a while. Hoping to get over to Bass Pro (gift card ftw) to pick up materials to start tying next week. These are the patterns I'll focus on: -Rabbit Leech (per your rec.) -Wooly Bugger -Bill's Craw (per @CWB ) -Small Streamer -Maybe pick up some popper bodies. I figure that would most likely keep me busy through the summer. I'd like to look at 1 more top water pattern but I'm not it too much of a rush.
Ive seen videos on orvis fly fishing of the guys wearing smallmouth out on clouser minnows. You might be able to tie them.
Im a huge fan of the hopper dropper set up. Anyone else use that? Im ignorant and the hopper helps me know if i have a bite.
I usually target bass, but have been wanting to try a hopper dropper for some time. Once I get in trout territory!
