Changed the front a rear diff oil and the t case fluid in my xterra today. Dealer claimed it was all done when I bought it but I'm always skeptical of these things. So 15k since I bought it and it was looking really good so I tend to believe that they actually did. 115k on the truck and everything looked absolutely perfect, just a smudge of black grime on the magnets. I'll bump these fluid changes to around 20k now, nissan recommends 30k but it is easy enough and with lots of hot weather and heavy loads/off road driving it is not gonna hurt anything to keep doing it alittle early. Put lucas gear oil in the specified weights in the diffs and royal purple max atf in the t case. Definitely faster shifts in and out of 4x4 now.
Fluid changes are really important on these it seems. I use Amsoil in the diffs and t-case. Valvoline Maxlife in the transmission and engine and stick to factory specified intervals for everything. I do the PMF (poor man's flush) on the transmission myself and it works pretty well. You can look it up, there's a couple good writeups for the Xterra and Frontier.
Getting my drawers sorted out. We took a trip to town today and I'm happy to report that the squeaks and rattles were minimal and the radio covered them all at a reasonable volume. I've got to change fluids in my diffs and t-case soon as well and then I'll work on wiring and mounting my compressor and associated plumbing.
Yup, I know for a fact my tranny fluid was done at 100k, with this being a 2011 I worry less about SMOD but definitely plan to stay on tranny fluid swaps. I am tempted to switch out to a completly separate tranny cooler just for complete peace of mind but I haven't decided yet. Also just pulled the trigger on some hefty fab engine and t case skids. Tranny, gas tank and radiator skids next time I have some extra cash. This is still my daily driver so I dont completely wail on it off road but I like the extra protection I'll get from the skids. These two are steel the rest will likely be aluminum.
Look up the Calsonic radiator numbers that caused issues in the Xterra forums and check it against yours. A new radiator isn't very expensive for the piece of mind and safety of your transmission. I never recommend leaving the OE radiator cooler bypassed, even if you add a second external (they already have one external) because they just aren't as efficient as the liquid to liquid cooler in the radiator.
Had one of those as well. Just sent this to a Godson.... ....asked if he knew where it went. He was VERY unkind. As a result I moved two of the Busses in my will from his list to his sister"s list. Little turd.
Got some rear window MOLLE panels installed. Picked them up used for reasonable monies and so far I'm happy. We'll see how useful they wind up being but I think my recovery gear on one and then camp stuff on the other.
That looks pretty interesting...!! How do they attach and are they vehicle specific ? I was actually looking at "Gull Wing" windows for the back.....or at least on the passenger side. ... https://www.toughtoys.com.au/produc...ow-suitable-for-toyota-landcruiser-76-series/
They hang from the hooks in the roof and have screws into the plastics on the bottom. If those screws don't stand up I'll be doing riv-nuts and 1/4" bolts with standoffs. They are vehicle specific. Hep's Designs makes them. Orange Box Fab makes a version as well. I don't like them as much because the intrude into the cargo area more than I think they should. Still well made and look nice, but not efficient use of space IMO.
