Few pictures from a recent trip to peak Maliovitsa - 2729 meters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malyovitsa , and to Rila Monastery - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rila_Monastery . Good times :)

The landscape was very beautiful, the mountain is high, but it is not all rocks, there are some trees. I like it a lot.
The hike was not hard - 7 hours in total.

We found this cool dude - he went to the peak and back a few times, then went with us all the way down. We gave him food and water and he was happy to have company.

The Monastery - built in 927 , near the place where a Bulgarian Saint - St Ivan Rilski was living. A true medieval stronghold. Really an amazing place.

Thank you! The tower is the oldest remaining building from medieval times - from 1335. Unfortunately there has been some destruction done by invaders over the years, however the monastery was rebuilt a few times and still goes strong!

Great pics mate.......I am still stunned how much like New Zealand it looks !!!! And in Europe you are surrounded by so much history...... !!!!! I remember being in Charleston South Carolina a few years ago and seeing the dates on the buildings (late 1600s) putting them 100 years before the English send a fleet here to Aus to settle.....but when I was in London/UK that was again blown out of he water..... !

Thanks, Andy! I would love to visit NZ some day, to check it out.
There really is so much history here, the city I live in has neolithic remains from 6-7000 years ago.
I was in Rome back in May and was stunned how much ancient architecture is saved there. Here - due to many wars, occupations, etc. - not so much.

Seeing rock paintings and other constructions (not as we know it but the "rearranging of natural features" to support life and nomadic civilisation) that go back 10 of thousands of years here brings it all into perspective. Many of us a just a blip in time !!

Thank you for posting up your part of the world !

I will keep posting. The nature we have is much more interesting than the post-commie concrete jungle in the towns :) There is that distinctive Iron Curtain architecture, with big and ugly public buildings and many flats instead of houses.

The only things we have from 6000 or 7000 years ago are stone artifacts.

I love the study of history. To see such things up close must be amazing. Please do keep posting what you see! Like having our own guide in the country. ;)

I should go to the city central area these days and make some photos of an ancient Roman forum that was there, also a part of an amphitheatre.
The main street of the city from Roman times is preserved at the lowest floor of our history museum and it is actually less than 100 meters from the current main street. Pretty cool.

Did a nice hike earlier in the week.

From the town of Sopot - with the gondola lift up to the higher mountain, then 1 and half hour hike to the Dobrila hut- 1804 meters above sea level. From there - 2 and half hours hike to peak Ambaritsa - 2166 meters and back to the hut.

The weather was OK, not too hot or cold, but there was a lot of fog most of the time. The fog convinced me to buy a handheld hiking GPS for the next adventures :D

There is a shelter on the top, as in winter it gets really nasty here

When there was no fog - the scenery was very beautiful. When the fog was thick - I couldn't see from one winter marking pole to another. Very mystical and cool. The route was very simple - I wouldn't want that fog on a complicated and long track!

It was a good hike, good eating and drinking at the hut - they have began to make a hotel next to it, I hope the "tourists" would not ruin the place.

    Cheers!

A bit of hiking today, I wanted to test the Garmin - I think that it works great, BUT it shut down by itself once, while I was browsing the menu, then it worked fine again with no further issues. It has 2 years of warranty and I have just written an email to the dealer, might have it replaced - we will see.
