Just realized why some of your blades look rather familiar! Grew up about 20 minutes from URE outfitters and still stop in regularly when I am home to visit and always look at their knife selection. Small world!

Ha! That's very cool. How far out are you now?
I'm literally halfway up the hill from URE. They've had several of my pieces for a couple months now, waiting to see what sells in what season, but it's a slow and small sampling process. Lots of tire-kickers... The other guy they carried who was using somebody's damascus (don't think his own?) and schmancy handle materials seems to have stopped making/selling.

Good question. It was an original 1967 *East* German part. (Nautilus was originally the "Alexander Von Humbolt".)

It feels like a proper carbon tool steel with significant carbide content, similar to stuff I regularly use. Hand-sanding it is unpleasant. It air-hardens in thin sections, and very thoroughly in my oil quench. I'm guessing it has a low percentage of chromium which does that, and maybe some vanadium for wear resistance as a bearing steel. It takes an edge somewhat like O1 or A2 - medium-fine and aggressive.

Ah, German steel. I would imagine that an Ocean going bearing would have to have a certain amount of stainless property, aside from strength?

EAST German steel. The ship was built in 1967. I don't think we can make assumptions about alloy standards across the Iron Curtain, though a lot f the blade and bearing alloys we still use date back to the early 20th century. Most bearings are carbon steel, especially at this scale. Though I've seen some 440C ball bearings the size of a baseball.
90% of a ship like that is rustable. Rusty, even. This bearing was not (should not have been!) in contact with sea water.

Oneill B&T in nitro-v and terofuf. This one's 1/8" but Jack's going to make me a few more in 3/32". I like the front choil as he has the plunge line forward a bit. It has a long 5 finger handle. lol
