@BlueDogScout Spotted one of these in a picture I posted and wanted to know about it? Out of respect for @Strigidae I started this thread, so as not to trash his" most excellent thread." It's a Neodymium rare earth magnet, when hung from a thread they will pull Magnetic North like crazy. They are replacing my Button Compasses in all my Survival Kits, very small and never leak or get a bubble. The Orange cord is for visibility if dropped, they also act as kind of a damper to slow the rocking they do when hunting north. I carry them tucked under some duct tape on my sheath. This keeps them "far" from my full sized compass if I am using it. These are crazy strong and you need to keep them far from hard drives, magnetic strip on credit cards and any thing that is magnetic. Having one or two as E&E gear stashed as zipper pulls or on your boot laces would work. Random Pics............ Picture @BlueDogScout spotted on a SAK I got from him........... I did on the first batch of these, on the second I did not. They are drilled on a taper, one side is bigger than the other. I just use the mantra "Big hole South pole, kind of like sighting through a funnel. It was Andy @5col that got me looking for something like this. He told me about a special magnet that went in the SEAL team survival kit. I couldn't find the same one as them, but these really rocked my world. Be really cool if the the ESEE boy's started putting these in their kits. Be happy to ship them one, if they wanted to give it the "Twice Over."
Does the shape of the magnet play any sort of factor? (Ex...Does a rectangular magnet have a more precise movement than a circle due to shape? )
We supply two small cylindrical magnets with the north end marked. All you do is put the two together with a piece of thread or dental floss in between the two magnets and it will show you N/S
