How often do you sharpen your knifes?

I am just curious how others do....

How often do you sharpen your knifes? What do you consider as sharp? If a knife cuts properly or only if its hair splitting? How often do you re profile?

I sharpen when the blade gets damaged . I strop about 3 times a week

 

Fairly often, but, there are 2 significant factors to consider. #1- type of steel and #2- amount of use. Like my edc pocket knife which is Aus-8 and get used several time a day, also get 4-5 strokes on white ceramic every other day or so.
My Izula stays on my pack but simply gets used less and so needs care less often. It's also significantly better steel, maintaining its useable edge longer. It gets the white ceramic about once a week or when performance starts to suffer.
The machete.......1055 steel. My "all purpose " tool. It gets used a lot, daily, and sometimes for serious edge killing work. It gets black ceramic. That might be several times a day if need be. I demand it to be useable sharp. There's also a double sided file if the damage is severe enough.

 

How long does it take to wear a knife down with these different types of sharpening frequencies?

 

I've had my izzy for several years and it is good for quite a few more

 

I just buy new knives when mine get dull!

 

I do the same. lol I suck at sharpening.

 

Actually, I wonder how many guys who can't sharpen really do that.... I heard that a few times....

 

I had my Izula at least 10 years with only barely noticeable wear. I retired my last folder after 5 years but it was just to go smaller, not due to significant wear.. I'm pretty sure I've lost more machetes than worn them out. I might have one around here that has seen better days, they last a long time even under less than nice use.

 

I'm honestly just really lazy. But really I have so many knives, none get used enough to really get that dull. But when it starts looking dull, it's my excuse for a new knife.

 

For the most part I try to 'keep ahead of it" and strop after use. I find that if I do this, I don't have to truly sit down and sharpen that often. Of course, it also depends on the particular steel - some need more regular attention than others.

 

I do a lot of knife sharpening just for fun and I have yet to wear a knife out. Generally, if it falls below a smooth cut, it goes to the stones. regular maintenance with a strop can cut that need down significantly. Most of the time I end up purposely dulling a knife so I have something to sharpen lol.

 

Sharpening for me is a nervous habit like smoking is for some of you. I have a Smith pocket sharpener with steel and ceramics on it that gets used on different knives daily.
Sometimes I also buy a knife just to sit and run on the ceramics because I'm agitated, bored, or engrossed in a thought process. Usually combined with coffee.

 

why you agitated? cuz your Other dominates you?

3-4 weeks, or as needed if I goob it up earlier.

I used to strop it regularly and keep it screaming sharp, but I got lazy.

 

Lately I'm only carrying a SAK or Leatherman and a small fixed blade. I maintain the blades as time allows. All are simple steels so the little ceramic sharpener I keep at work or the Worksharp field sharpeners I keep in our vehicles are all I generally use.

I do have a Kershaw folder that sometimes gets carried at work. I sharpen it with a small handheld pneumatic rotary grinder, a file or whatever is handy.

I keep my knives sharp, but I don't do hair whittling or cut tissue paper or such. None of that matters to me so I don't waste my time with it. They easily cut everything I cut so I'm happy with that.
