@FortyTwoBlades and anyone else who can chime in, I'm looking at picking up my first axe. Problem is I have no idea what to get. I was checking out the Council tool boys axe and Hudson bay on the byx site, both look nice and the price is right. Which would you recommend?

Use is going to be general household chores and camping. I'm not planning on felling and massive trees anytime soon, just processing some dead fall, as well as camp and hunting tasks.

Either will do fine. It's a matter of preference between the two, really.

What would you recommend for field sharpening? Puck or a field stone?

Either will do. The puck is best for axes or tools of like kind. The field stone is less well suited to that kind of scrubbing action, but can be used that way and can be used for sharpening knives more readily than the puck can. It's a tradeoff of what functions you most want it to excel in.

This one will be specific to the axe, so I'd like it to be best for that purpose.

I've got a splitting maul, an Eastwing 26" Campers Axe, and a 14" Craftsman Hatchet. Not really a fan of the Eastwing Camper's Axe. I take the Craftsman hatchet along camping and use it to split kindling, pounding in tent stakes, and other tasks. Got a good deal on the craftsman but if I were to purchase a new hatchet I would look into the Husqvarna hatchet.

You'd think I would ha e made a decision by now, but I haven't o_O. @FortyTwoBlades does the council tool axe come with any kind of sheath? I wouldn't expect it to at that price but worth an ask. If not, can you recommend one?

It doesn't come with one, but I can make one from HDPE economically. :) Here's an example I made for a customer just a few days ago.

Go for the boys axe. Best value/performance for the money.

Any particular reasons you like that profile better? I'm completely new to ax use, so I'm not too familiar with the differences in designs.

I’ve got a boys axe but don’t remember the brand. That size is handy and easy to use, especially if you are just learning about axes. I also have a Gerber/Fiskers Camp axe ( @20”) that’s been a decent axe for light chopping, limbing and light splitting duty.
My most used axe is my 35 year old Craftsman double bitted axe but it’s really over kill for most chores.

Thank for the help everybody! I just received my axe last night and am pretty stoked to get out and try it. @FortyTwoBlades the edge looks great! It was also packaged up really well.
